Taberna da Esquina — Restaurant in Lisbon

Our meal was fine with a generous portion of well cooked food however service and atmosphere (we were given a table on our own by the front window) were very poor. Problems arose when it came to settle the bill which we asked to be done in euros as we had set up a euro account through our bank to avoid fees and exchange rate penalties in converting to pound sterling. The waiter incorrectly charged the bill in pounds which included a 5% mark up and an unfavourable exchange rate. We were then asked to sign to say we accepted payment in sterling which we declined to do however payment had already been charged to our sterling account. Great restaurant with excellent food and service, we enjoyed the outdoor seating though it is on a busy road, so not super scenic, but they do a good job making it feel cozy with nice ambiance. It's out of the way of the historic Lisbon center, so we never would have discovered it if our tour guide to Sintra hadn't recommended it to us, but it was just a quick uber ride back to our apartment in Alfama. We enjoyed the regional Alentejo red wine our server recommended as well as all of the dishes we ordered. It's 19.30 and I ask for a table for one person. The restaurant is totally empty. The staff very rudely say that they have no place as everything is booked. I tell them I will not take much time but they were really not polite and it is clear that it was just because I was only one person. They don't realize that many people travel alone nowadays and still have right to eat. Luckily I was very well received by a Vietnamese restaurant in the corner, but being in Portugal I would have preferred to eat Portuguese food.
