All hype! They don’t do bookings so it’s get there early or queue and wait. The reviews were good so we came here (early in the end) and were sorely disappointed. Food was okay not great in my opinion as a general rule anyway eg. prawns overly greasy (too much butter), octopus salty etc. One server was lovely the other was patronising/rude and a 3rd unresponsive + waiting was adhoc so lacked attentiveness. Food was slow this isn’t uncommon on the island from experience but this was particularly slow. The wine we wanted wasn’t available in fact 2/4 of that region were so that halved our choice. We then had 3 further mistakes/errors in the one sitting: 1) we asked for a second round of our 2 pints of cider, we got 2 pints of dark beers. At first I wondered why then when the bill came realised they put the 2 dark beers on instead of ciders to be fine with which were more expensive resulting in the error and almost overcharging us!!! 2) when serving mains the server tilted the plate pouring sauce in a half drunk pint (completely fine as he apologised and wanted to correct) but he replaced this with normal beer not the cider we were drinking? 3) we ordered a medium stake which came BLUE and we raised this, it came back with the 2 middle parts flash fried but only those 2 slices so given how rare it was the rest was still more rare than desired plus the meat was very fatty throughout so the ‘weight per menu’ was misleading as well. Worst steak we have had in the Azores (4 islands between the 4 covers - we had a lot of steak!). Photo attached of after it was cooked the second time. Overall human error happens but the experience was really disappointing and poor. Disclaimer: we raised the steak again and they did discount it from the bill as well as amending the 2 incorrect and overpriced beers but these shouldn’t have occurred to begin with. Don’t recommend.

wow...I don't usually write reviews but this place was so disappointing I wanted to get this off my chest. Seeing that A Tasca was one of the highest rated and most reviewed restaurant in Ponta Delgada, I was really looking forward to this meal, but man was this place a let down. Our experience started with the hostess letting us know that the wait will be 1 hour or more, which was understandable considering we put our name down at the prime 7pm time. We got some drinks, and waited in the waiting area (which had ample seating). I went up to the hostess to make sure we were on the list twice, and she kept telling me yes, and that we still need to wait. 2 hours later, I began to see people who came way later than us getting seated, and that is when I asked her the third time when our table will be ready. The hostess claimed that she called our name and no one answered. She seated us 5 minutes later after the 2 hour mark. Miscommunication happens and this was all understandable. Service was decent so I'm giving them a star for that. What blew my mind was the HORRIFIC FOOD. We ordered the catch of the day (bluefin tuna) with fries, and the octopus stew. The fish was hardly seasoned, the vegetable sides were super bland, and those fries...they were soft and cold and just about one of the worst fries I've ever had at a restaurant. As for the octopus stew, the stew base was way too salty, and the octopus tasted mushy and not fresh and all. We were planning to get dessert but after these two dishes, we wanted to get out of the restaurant as fast as possible. I honestly have no idea why this restaurant is rated so high. Food was mediocre at best (in fact, it was horrible imo), and the wait was ridiculous. PLEASE, save yourselves the wait time and trouble and go somewhere else. Vacation time is precious and this ain't worth it.

For those that appreciate their time and taste buds: A Tasca is a busy restaurant, with long waiting times. According to the internet it is a famous restaurant in Ponta Delgada. If you are truly a foodie, you would really appreciate my extensive review. First of all, the long waiting list: you have to go inside and sign up for the waiting list. The estimated waiting time is 2 hours. We arrived around 20:15 and waited until 22:15. Then you can choose to stay or leave, we chose to wait just like all the other people. Obviously we wanted to see what the hype is all about. After finally getting our table, we ordered the following items: Garlic bread 🍞(we thought this dish would be safe, but it tasted like old stale bread but toasted) Gambas a Bart 🍤(was the only nice dish) Breaded octopus with onion chutney 🐙 (the breaded part tasted a bit weird) Limpets 🦪 (overcooked) Octopus salad 🐙 (not to our personal liking) Grilled sirloin steak 🥩 (very chewy, but seriously chewy) Fish stew with noodles🍲 (was actually just an overcooked macaroni/pasta soup with tomato. We expected like actual noodles) Black pork cheeks in red wine sauce🥩 (meat was sour, could have been the traditional flavor, was just not to our personal liking, meat shouldn’t taste sour in our opinion) Octopus stew 🐙 (was okay if you like it). And the fries that come with some mains are soggy, not even crispy. If you do like the taste, you get rather a large portion, which is good if it is to your liking. Even if I didn’t have to wait 2 hours, I would not come. This review is not to put down the staff as they were friendly, but only to warn future customers. You are free to try it yourself, but don’t say I didn’t warn you 🙂↕️.

TOURIST TRAP! Let’s be honest this is the greatest marketing campaign created by tourists themselves. We got there the first night to find out the queues are 2-3 hours long, but supposedly it’s best food in town. Like sheep for the second night in a row we decided to follow this trap and this time we arrived at 6:30 hoping that the wait will be shorter. Well this time around we ended up waiting for 2 hours!! At this point when you are absolutely starving and desperate to sit down you obviously just finish waiting. So we did. At that point I knew this restaurant is purely running on the feeling of FOMO, rather than actual food quality. The place was filled only with tourists which was a warning sign. We sat down, the service is non existent. I looked around and saw a lot of disappointed faces trying to catch waiters attention either for their desert or bill still with dirty plates on their tables. The food arrived, basic as ever. Lapas were like rubber and bitter, after trying them at a fish restaurant on the coast these were just incomparable. The chorizo was nice but let’s be honest it’s hard to ruin it. The other two dishes were absolutely basic, nothing special. Octopus was tender, but the flavour was lacking. So were the pork cheeks, flavour was quite bland and they were certainly not worth the wait… at all! After finishing our main course we proceeded to wait for the plates to be cleared. Waited and waited… more than 20 minutes. Asked for the bill and left. Don’t waste your time on this place, there are plenty of other restaurants around with much better and interesting food, let alone the service.

Okay, the food is good. Great selection, lots of local & traditional options, & the setting & location is solid. BUT, the service was awful. At least for me. IF you decide to go, try to get the bearded guy with the glasses & beard as your server. Watching from a distance, he was quick, observant, funny, spoke great English, & was an excellent, charming host. I, on the other hand, got the older woman as my server, & she was terrible. Painfully slow, never checked on me, had to be reminded multiple times for every request, had ZERO personality, & basically made me feel like I was forgotten in the corner. It took me nearly 3 hours to have lunch. I’m all for a leisurely vacation pace, but that’s ridiculous. I shouldn’t have to ask for basics like a napkin with my dessert, & I shouldn’t have to walk over & grab my own dessert menu, after asking for one & waiting for 15 minutes to not receive it, despite it being 8 feet away. In her/ their defense, it was fairly busy, but NOT so busy that you don’t have time to check on your tables until & unless they flag you down. Which I had to do EVERY time I wanted/ needed something. It shouldn’t take a second reminder, & 30 minutes of twiddling your thumbs, to get the check you’d already asked for. And it’s not cheap. My lunch, tho extensive & with drinks, for one person, was €42. For that price, I expect (fairly) at least DECENT service. This was not that. I enjoyed the food, but not enough to return & waste half a day being frustrated. You’ve been warned.
