Almada Café — Restaurant in Porto

3.5 stars. Inexpensive, neighborhood, diner-type place. Simple, utilitarian, furniture and décor. Walls covered with local event posters and lottery advertising. Full bar with counter seating for eating, drinking, and buying scratch tickets. Plus a pastry case upfront with some delicious looking desserts. Wide ranging menu with Portuguese & Brazilian specialties, chicken, sausages, and veal amongst the dishes on offer. And the menu with sections in multiple languages. The prices were stunningly inexpensive. On our visit it was fairly busy and the servers were handling it all with a carefree and personable attitude. Also very helpful in making a decision. Today I chose seafood rissoles-shrimp in bechamel sauce-which were similar to a deep-fried empanada, served with rice & chips (fries). These were light on filling imo but were tasty. DW had a grilled chicken breast with mushrooms. This was as expected except for the canned mushrooms. Also served with rice & chips. Not high-end dining by any means but tasty, filling, and cheap but not memorable. As we spent time in the area over the next couple of days, we came to realize that this café is very popular, with tables full and waits on the sidewalk numerous times. Don't eat here!! Listen to what others have said about the rudeness of a certain youngish, brown haired male server (i think he had facial hair. Sorry, he was quite unremarkable other than his rudeness and incompetence). He was openly hostile after ordering our food for no reason. We asked for a liter of water, and he brought the water, but no glasses?? Are 4 people supposed to swig out of one bottle and pass it around? Next, he brings sangria, but with 2 water glasses, his coworker saw this and came over with proper glasses and claimed the other guy doesn't speak English. What a joke, we've lived in Porto for 2 months now ( no we arent tourists) near Constituição where English is rare, and yet they all seem to be able to perform their job correctly and are professional and kind as well. Even if the food here was the best I'd ever eaten at the worlds lowest prices, I'd never go back. This server must be related to an owner or have blackmail material on someone to still hold his job there. We will take our Americano...

Well, the waiter was what I would describe as rude and openly hostile. We relocated here over 2 months and are just getting a grasp of the language, but of the dozens of places we've been to, this was the only time someone made us feel unwelcome.

Food was ok for the price, so fair enough there. The atmosphere is typical of a porto eatery, nothing special though.

We go out to eat 4 or 5 times a week and have returned to some places quite a few times. I would only return to this place if the food was free. That might make the attitude the waiter bearable.

If you're reading this review for some guidance, I would recommend you go literally anywhere but here. There are so many excellent local eateries here, don't judge porto...
