Not your typical hipster restaurant that has been popping up all over Lisbon, this place offers excellent traditional Portuguese fare at its core at reasonable price.
Not readily visible from the bus route, so have to look for it near the roundabout before Sintra train station.
Came recommended from the travel guide, and it is true that this restaurant provides big hearty portions with fresh ingredients served by friendly waiters.
Though this place is a little small, everything inside is very nicely kept, tidy, and clean. They even have Android tablet menus in multiple languages so that you do not get lost in translation when ordering.
Most locals/regulars order the traditional seafood or monkfish stews with rice, so we ordered that too. The stews were very flavorful and bursting with seafood umami. Every bit of rice taste like the clams / prawns / fish that it was cooked with. However, if you do not appreciate the texture of soft rice mixed in with the stew, then may want to skip this.
It is of note that though they do not brand themselves as a seafood restaurant, the cod and sea bream were one of the freshest we have tasted, very comparable to other specialized seafood restaurant in lisbon in terms of taste (and at fraction of price of high end restaurants). The char on fish was perfect, still preserving the sweet and delicate meat under the crispy skin.
Will definitely be back the next time we visit...
Read moreI don't know if I just ordered wrong and got unlucky with the service tonight but this wasn't my favorite food stop in Sintra. The lamb entree I ordered had a considerable amount of chewy sinew and gristle with it and countless small, nearly imperceptible bones in it that I would've cracked my teeth on if I wasn't careful. The price was reasonable. Just not overly thrilled with the end product. The service was friendly and welcoming, but delivering a set of olives and bread right when I sat down without me asking for it ("oh neat, they give a snack while I wait for dinner!"), then charging me for it was a bit annoying. Anyway, given that Rick Steves (one of my travel idols) is a big fan and he hits the mark usually, I expected a bit more. Nonetheless, life goes on and I'm already thinking about which Sintra restaurant to try next.
Edit: Regarding the "free" olives and bread, I learned yesterday from a Portuguese friend that this is common practice. They'll set them at many tables right when you sit down. If you eat a single olive or a piece of bread, you pay for the snacks. If you don't touch them, you don't pay. The...
Read moreWe came all the way from America to travel Europe by car, we are always very selective when we go to any restaurant because we are chefs. Well, we are 3 adults and a toddler, my son fell asleep and I grabbed 2 chairs and layed my son down to sleep , well, not even 5 minutes after they asked me to wake him up because they needed that extra chair; well, restaurant was almost empty no extra chair needed, when I mentioned"if I have to wake my son up I'll rather live" they didn't stop me, they accepted me to cancel our 4 orders and let me go! Right after I left my husband and brother stayed to see if a different reaction happened and they were still so rude, they brought the food to the table like nothing happened, and my husband told him "if my son is not accepted here I will leave as well" Very bad and rude service. We've been in more that 12 restaurants in a week time this trip, and never bother anyone because of a child sleeping. And on top of that, when walking out because I stood up and grabbed my toddler and carry him out the waitress mumbled "...
