As a first-time visitor in Belgrade, I found Radost House, and immediately felt both, at home and in love.
Located on the first floor of an old building on Pariska, without any advertising on the front, Radost House seems to welcome you as a guest in somebody’s apartment.
Wooden furniture, potted herbs on the tables, menus wrapped in old books, the music on the speakers varying from old time Jazz to Soul to classic Rock, but always tuned up to an opinionated, yet still talk-friendly volume—all of the above, plus a sufficient dose of delicious scents from the open kitchen, a big smile from a friendly face, a handshake coming straight from the very heart of Serbia’s proverbial hospitality, followed by top-notch service and the most incredible vegan Mezze and beetroot/beans burgers I’ve had in the 40+ years of my life so far, created an experience that would make we want to come back almost every night.
Which I pretty much did, and it never gets old. Night after night, I would meet friends attending the world’s largest WordPress conference in the city, who had either found Radost House on their own, or I had made them find it, and each and everyone said they had an amazing time at this uniquely beautiful place.
A few things to be aware of: If you check out the garden, be prepared that smoking is allowed; the same goes for a part of the restaurant inside; if you’re sensitive to smoke, ask for a table in the dedicated non-smoking area. Reservation is definitely recommendable since the place is highly popular, although just walking in early in the evening will probably work, because the friendly staff will kindly ask if it’s ok to share a table with strangers—which for a friend and myself led to a most interesting conversation with people we wouldn’t have had a chance to talk to otherwise. Definitely try a local wine!
10 out of 5 stars, Radost House! My senses still feel bathed in your kindness and delicious tastes, and I’ll be back as soon as I get but remotely close to...
Read moreRadost is placed in old building looking over the Kalemegdan, but also looking over the very busy road, so don't sit next to the open window cos it gets a bit loud. From the outside you wont see it at first so don't get confused, when you enter the building it is in the first apartment on the right hand side. It is not completely smoke free but it doesn't get to smoky. Interior is mix between traditional and modern, and it gives you a good vibe and with nice music in the back ground you will enjoy spending time there. Wednesday menu was consisting of one starter, one soup, one salad, two main dishes and two deserts and one main dish that was of the menu. Two of us had meze for starters consisting of some nice thin tortillas and 4 different dipping souses and olives on the side. Humus was nice and all the other souses could use a bit more salt just to enhance the taste of the ingredients. For main dish we had veggie burgers and Mexican tortillas with fresh salad and one veggie kebab. Burger again needed more taste in it, tortillas were nice and salad had some great fresh dressing with dried fruit. Portion size was just enough. The highlight of the lunch was desert consisting of carrot cake which was amazing, every bite was full of taste and harmony and fresh vegan fruit ice cream that was refreshing and subtle. They also blend for you fresh juices and have take away option. Ingredients were fresh and all was made from scratch. Service was really helpful, explaining to details every dish and taking care of you. All in all visiting Radost was pleasant experience, and I would recommend it to all fellow vegans and vegetarians but also to carnivores to try something new, and indulge fresh approach to everyday food. I wish nothing but good luck to Radost in widening their menu and attracting more new visitors and helping in creating some new...
Read moreLet me start with the timing: We were among the first customers, had reservation and were seated at 2:02PM. Less than 10 minutes later we placed our orders. Appetizers arrived after 3PM and main courses at 4:08PM (yes, I checked my watch). Apparently there was a miscommunication between the waiter and kitchen and our order was not communicated. By the time this was corrected, the kitchen was overwhelmed with other orders. Considering that there was one waiter only, I guess that there were no more than one or two people in the kitchen.
There was also not an option to substitute bulgur salad... "you know, you don't have to eat it" was the response.
Appetizers were great.
Main course...not so. I had bolognese lasagna which was not good at all: there was a thick, jawbreaker crust, and pasta inside was overcooked and all dry-mushy inside (a cookie dough texture). Side salad was excellent, though.
I also tried mozzarella rolled in eggplant. This time the texture was better, eggplant was fine but that was not mozzarella for sure. Don't know if it was a vegan mozzarella look-alike, but it did not taste like much, definitely not like mozzarella.
I would like to give this place a second chance, but restaurant competition is so fierce, I am not sure if...
