The OLDEST RESTAURANT in Belgrade - housed in an old tavern (katana) from 1823! This places also features a warm hearth, wooden beams and delicious Balkan courses such as “podvarak” and “pljeskavica”.
Curious name for a restaurant- it’s literally called a “question mark” or “?”. I read up the story - and it’s indeed super fascinating! In 1892, the tavern changed hands and the new owner, Ivan Pavlović, attempted to rename it again after the nearby Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel, an idea which was met with a vehement protest from the Serbian Orthodox Church authorities. And hence, without a resolution, decided to just hang up a board which read “?”- and the name just caught on and stuck! This place is also declared a Protected Monument of Culture by the government in 1981 (source: Atlas Obscura).
But the outdoor seating with the most fabulous view to the Cathedral Church of St. Michael is such an icing to the cake! I tried the traditional Serbian minced meat-stuffed 🍖 peppers 🫑 with mashed potatoes 🥔 (called “punjene paprike”)- which was a filling Final breakfast before I headed to the airport. The jovial owner also made my day - by patiently taking all these photos from all possible angles and left me with such a great image of the city!

Read moreI have been here 7 years ago, and I liked it a lot so went there twice back then. I came back to Belgrade wanting to go back to this restaurant as ell. So today, i brought my husband wishing him to try the tasty Serbian food, and the result was very disappointing. I have explained to the waiter what I wanted (as there were three types of Muckalica), but he kept repeating the name of dish then served us the most expensive one. Apparently, the one I wanted was least expensive one. Food was okay, but as we were expecting something else, we did not enjoy much. There was a problem when I tried to pay as well. My card seemed to not working when I entered the pin number, so I asked my husband to go and get some money exchanged as the money exchange was only a few metres away. Today was our last day in Belgrade so we did not want to exchange too much money. Then the waiter started to force us to use different card, which we did not have and when we explained that we want to get the money exchanged and pay, he tsk tsk at us then complained to other waiters and only then they offered us to pay in Euro. I was very upset in the end, and was regretting to bring my husband there as we actually had a nicer restaurant nearby our room. I think this was my last dinner here, and would...
Read moreFirst, this place is not a hotel and the star ratings should be revised to show it as a restaurant.
We had a delightful lunch in a destination place for us. It is the oldest continuously running kaffana in the Balkans and maybe Europe. The building is well worn from years of use and beautiful with its nooks and crannies and places to sit and eat.
We sat in the back patio or courtyard area and it was great. No smokers and protection from the off and on again rain.
The staff were super friendly to us. I don’t think they speak much English but they were helpful and mindful.
We ordered goulash, grilled veggies, and a local favorite salad of blended red peppers and eggplant. I have never had a brown goulash, but why not, the word simply means stew and not red stew. It was fantastic. The veggies were perfectly cooked and the salad with bread was scrumptious.
And yes, we had coffee too.
We live here and will be back. It’s a 15-18 minute walk from our apartment. We see that many people don’t like that it is touristy, but if I were a tourist, I would want to come too.
Big shout out and kudos for keeping ?...
