Food was exceptional-plus! Generous portions too. The grilled marrow bones as a starter were amazing, as was the tender calf’s liver as a main course. Our table was(supposedly) not ready at the given time of our arrival, our reservation was for upstairs, yet our table was downstairs and was not ready. Upon arrival, we were shambolically herded downstairs, then herded upstairs… rather, directed to the bar, to spend money before our meal… sophisticated finesse not being a strong point amongst the waitering staff. Nevertheless we chose not to sit where directed at the bar. Waitering service: It appeared to be haphazard team effort. We had multiple hands serving our table and multiple fingers inappropriately holding plates of food, in contact with, and touching the food …fingers holding dishes of food inappropriately - again: sophisticated finesse not being a strong point amongst the waitering staff. Our dishes were haphazardly thrust onto our table mostly being stretched across us, when there actually was ample space around the table to allow for decent well-mannered placing of drinks and plates of food( service ignorance and lack of training blatantly apparent). The waiters were well versed to top up drinks, and constantly replenish unasked-for bottles of water, yet untrained, chaotic and loud communication amongst each other where serving of food was concerned. The owner-chef was in and out of his kitchen various times, but not interested in acknowledging or greeting his patrons. All-in-all, superb food was had by all at our table. Dining experience not that pleasant due to the polite, pleasant but untrained-in-table-service, waiters. We had our fill of being stretched across by the numerous waiters, and chaotic service, so we chose to go elsewhere for dessert, to complete our evening dining. Note: for those needing to know about access: no wheelchair access , stairs to upper level, stairs to...
Read moreWe had an odd time at Carne. Everything seemed great when we arrived. Our waiter told us about special wines on a table and we decided to take advantage of trying a slightly older vintage. He told us that the wine will be on a separate invoice and we said it was fine. They then brought a tray with various meats and tell you about the meat. When he told us about the "safari" option he showed us the meat, 5 different fillets- ostrich, blesbok, wildebeest, kudu and springbok. Oddly the fillets all looked exactly the same- and from working as a chef at a game lodge I know that ostrich and springbok are much darker in colour. When tasting it, it literally seemed that they just used different spices to make you think you were eating different kinds of venison. The starters we had was beautiful- the beef breseola was incredible and would recommend. Once we finished our meal our waiter brought us the bill. We added a 15% tip- 5% more than the customary expectation. The waiter then told us about our wine which we paid for, and as soon as the payment went through, he briskly walked away and never saw him again. There was no appreciation for our patronage or our gratuity. It was a dissapointing evening and wish we could have spent our last night in Cape Town at a better restaurant. I won't recommend...
Read moreAs it was my last night in CPT, I felt I couldn't leave without having a steak. Unfortunately I found some aspects of my meal quite disappointing.
Since I don't care for wine I was offered a 'classic cocktail.' I requested a Manhattan which I had to send back twice. This first because it was prepared in a shaker, whereas it is supposed to be a stirred drink. It had ice shards which were unpleasant and it was watered down. The second was loaded up with ice cubes. It is supposed to be served straight up. Why didn't the bartender consult Google? The drink was a quarter of my total bill so, I feel compelled to elaborate on my frustration for not getting what I asked for.
The bread was stale.
The steak was okay and may work for others but I love a crust on the outside which mine did not have. Not a knock against Carne in that regard as it was cooked to the correct temp and decently seasoned. I enjoyed the mushroom and brandy sauce along with the spinach.
I think the staff did a good job of explaining the different cuts.
I was only offered Still or Sparkling water and was very annoyed when I chose Still and was billed 50R for it.
This was a disappointing way to finish off my last...
