Over priced average food!
Been wanting to go to this place for a while and boy was it a complete disappointment! Portions are tiny! Dumplings had hardly any filling in them and to charge R50-55 for three tiny dumpling is a complete ripoff.
Nice flavours on the Beef Bao but again hardly any filling! After 6x starters (I had 4 myself) I was still hungry and ordered the braised beef main meal. I asked to see the portion size and was shown a container and when it came not even 1/3 of the container had food in it. Mainly filled with rice, sauce and four tiny pieces of braised beef! For a cost of R95 this should have been three times the size at least.
After travelling the world for 13yrs and having spent considerable time in the East (China; Japan; Singapore; Thailand and others) this place does not hold up to its name. I’ve had better dumplings from a street vendor in China for 1/10th of the price. Also coming from the industry I know the main Asian supplier in the Cape “Ding Ho” and with this understand the costings of the food. For what you get, bar the fact the food lacks any substance or flavour, this is just pure extortion!
Please also explain to me why you use expensive single use throw away containers for your food. So wasteful and completely unconscious! My wife and I generally don’t eat a lot and after spending over R600 on the meal, we left hungry and went up the road to Ciao Pizza to get a takeaway.
Don’t waste your time dining here there is a fantastic Vietnamese spot called “Yen’s Vietnamese Street Food” in De Waterkant that serves cheaper and far...
Read moreHave been wanting to come here for ages, as every time we pass by, they’re always closed. We thought this evening we were in luck to get a table…but…
Sadly disappointing. Overpriced for the portion sizes. Lacks flavour with all their items. And served on throw-away paper plates and plastic utensils? Why be so wasteful for a sit-down restaurant? I don’t get it.
We had nearly all the dumplings. Plus a beef bao, beef main and the special for the day. Dumplings were below average. Stuck to the paper plates. Boa was ok but very little filling. Coconut soup was overpriced and bland. The Beef “main” was served in a tiny paper bowl and was only filled a third full for R95, totally poor value for money. We fortunately (unfortunately for the owner) do know better - we’ve travelled the world extensively and have frequented China, Japan and many other Asian countries well over a two dozen times each per country. This little place sadly did not represent “South China” at all.
The service was pleasant and the venue is quaint, but sadly that’s where it ends. Would not go back. Poor value for what you get. We also know food costings because we also come from the industry and know exactly what Asian produce costs and all other catering items.
We also left here still feeling hungry. Went up the road to get a...
Read moreThe food is this restaurant was pretty good. We ordered several dumplings and the daily special. We were a bit surprised to discover the menu had no prices, but no matter we thought, the portions are small so it mustn't be too expensive. We were wrong. What really frustrated me was my partner ordered another round of tea which never came. No big deal. The problem however was the owner's attitude towards me with regards to this. When it came time to pay the bill, he quickly rang everything up and told me a total. Shocked by the 485 rand total for two soups two dumplings and two steamed buns, I asked for an explanation of the bill. After challenging me on when I ordered the tea that was still sitting behind the counter, he took it off the tab. I was also a big shocked to find two condiment charges for a tiny saucer of soy sauce and other sauce which we did not ask for but were brought to us nevertheless. In summary, there are so many other restaurants in this city that do a better job and are much happier to receive my patronage. I would absolutely not recommend this...
