Yuck! We've been to Der Zucker Backer a couple of times in the past 12 months and after yesterday's visit I am trying to understand why. The restaurant is actually quite filthy, everywhere. So much so that one of the guests at the table next to us actually used the hand sanitizer to clean the wall...YES you read it she cleaned the wall next to her because it was so dirty. The chairs the tables the toilet it's all filthy. The servers are friendly, probably the only thing they have going for them but the food oh my. We paid well over R400 for 3 people which is I guess reasonable for today but here it is Yuck! Two of us had the halloumi wrap that is supposed to have halloumi, avo, lettuce, tamato and sweet Chilli sauce or mayo. Well I we had the worst wrap ever so doughy bread thing, wafer thin dry halloumi one lost piece of avo and maybe one carved up piece if lettuce..what happened to the sauce I have no idea. The food was so dry I was forced to drink the most revolting kiwi and mint sweet syrup thing with no mint flavor that made me even more nauseous. So back to the point..why did we go back 3 times in 13 months? Honestly I don't know but sure...

Extremely disappointing. Most definitely not the place I remembered from when they were in Hazlewood. We ordered two toasted cheese sandwiches and waited more than an hour during which time the waiter didn't check on us once. I had to go look for him to find out where the food was. He slammed it down on the table with the exscuse that they were busy, but only 4 tables had patrons. No more than 12 guests in total with a waiting staff close to that amount. He immediately disappeared again before we could ask for salt (there was none on the table) or something to drink. We could hear our waiter and 3 more of the waiting staff loadly having cell phone conversations and conversing with each other sitting in one section of the restaurant. No waiter was available to ask for a bill after we tried to eat the dried out sandwiches and wilted salad, without anything to drink. It was our intention to have some Bee Sting for which they are known, but after the bad experience we decided to pay and leave. We had to go to the till to pay. The decor and ambience was also unappealing. Will definitely not...

I have to say, Der Zucker Baker completely blew me away. First off, the chocolate fruit cake is out of this world. It’s not just a dessert — it’s an experience. The fruits are fresh and beautifully arranged, but what really sets it apart is the homemade custard. It’s smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced with the drizzle of chocolate on top. Every bite feels indulgent but not too heavy — just the right amount of sweetness and freshness. You can taste the care and attention that went into it. Then there’s the Salmon on Rye, which honestly might be one of the best I’ve had anywhere. The portion is generous, the salmon is incredibly fresh, and the combination with avocado, tomato, and cream cheese is spot on. It’s the kind of meal that makes you stop and appreciate how good real, fresh food can taste. Even the fries were perfectly seasoned and crisp. Der Zucker Baker isn’t just serving food — they’re serving passion on a plate. Everything feels homemade, thoughtful, and full of flavor. I walked away genuinely impressed and already planning my next visit. Highly...

Terrible service, but apart from that, this is not a German confectionery. Spelling mistakes galore, even in English. No German ambiance or culture. The pastries are fair quality and relatively authentic, but definitely not what it was circa 1995. And it’s ZUCKERBÄCKER. One word. Please rebrand. You’re about as German as a Land Rover. As for your response, it is clear you are not German. Germans pay attention to detail and represent themselves with pride and accuracy, which includes the occasional Umlaut and correct grammar. The owners from 1985 represented that, you don’t. If you believe that the standards you have listed are true and accurate, clearly you haven’t read many of your other reviews. A disgrace for the first owner sounds about right.

Nice presentation, Chips were ok not dry good taste almost like a slup chip. Beef prego, hot, tasteless was hoping the source was tasty or the beef but sadly the heat of it overpowers whatever the flavors were. Milk tart for dessert, again a nice presentation on a plastic plate but hey all about the tart at the end of it. Nice firm base doesn't fall apart, has a lovely smell of sweet heaven. Sadly, little taste, crust is bland not to the constancy of a normal milk tart. The milky part was thick but again needs more attention to taste. Der Zucker Bäcker needs still some guidance hopefully they improve and take this as a helping guide. Thx for having me Only had a tea. Have random birds flying through it 🤣 Waiter was cool
