This particular Fishmonger branch in Rosebank is especially good. The seafood was perfectly cooked, firm and fresh and the service was outstanding.
Where other seafood restaurant chains cut costs by supplementing their lemon "butter" with margarine, Fishmonger gives you the real deal because they know you're not stupid and can taste the difference.
The attention to detail makes all the difference. I doubt I'll ever settle for the "sea basket" option again.
We had the vegetable option with our prawns, sole and calamari, which was incredible, and the creamed spinach had been made with a rich stock and actual cream (delicious), which meant it didn't taste like a mouthful of cornstarch like the grey green spinach served by so many other restaurants these days. And I'm not a fan of sweet pumpkin or butternut, usually preferring it savoury but their's had just a hint of orange juice zest and was cooked just right so that it almost converted me. But the seafood was the hero, as it should be. They know how to do it. Best prepared seafood I've had in Joburg to date.
Everything tasted of quality and was presented as such. We felt like we were getting great value and that our investment in the meal was appreciated and not taken for granted. The management run a tight ship and you can tell their waitering staff are well-seasoned and professional, which is usually an indication of staff that are well-treated. Many restaurants undervalue how important it is to retain and take care of staff for consistency and experience. The constant turnover of staff so common at most restaurants results in service that is mediocre if not disappointing. Undervalued staff give substandard service.
The managers are hands on and check in on you in just the right way, without hovering or disturbing your meal and the whole experience was the highlight of our week. We will be back with pomp poms, short skirts and a dance sequence next time because this place is worthy of some cheerleaders. Gimme a Y Gimme a U...
Read moreI’m from the Southern Philippines where my step mom and dad would go every morning to the wet market to buy the catch of the day. When she got home my stop mom would then cook the fish for lunch. Seafood was never refrigerated or frozen. It was always fresh catch of the day. So I know what fresh fish tastes like.
Before heading to the airport on our last day in South Africa, I’m so happy to we were able to eat in Fishmonger Rosebank.
We told the waiter Frederick that we had to leave by a certain time to check out of our hotel and he made sure to serve us quickly and efficiently with so much attention to details. We really appreciated it! We felt spoiled!
It’s very rare for me to be served fish with a fish knife but it seems to be what’s done in South Africa. I usually do it at home as a diplowifr. These little details really help a meal Stand out.
The bread looked like giant lips. It was nice and crusty on the outside yet soft and airy inside. Very yummy with butter.
When the food came, we were in food heaven! Perfectly cooked and seasoned. For 2 adults and 1 child the following was just right:
9pcs grilled Mozambique Queen Prawns + French fries with cheese on top for sides grilled Kingklip + French fries with cheese on top for sides (this is a local fish and it was perfectly flaky!)
Even if we didn’t order dessert, Frederick gave us a sweet end to our meal with delicious strawberry ice cream - my son and husband’s favorite!
If you love fresh seafood, I highly...
Read moreTop spot for a bit of lunch and people watching. Goodman steered me away from the smoking area and to a ringside seat outside for watching the people and day go by.
The Sea Bass, recommended by mine host James, was sublime. The Bass, filleted, was cajun spiced and perfectly cooked, although the melted butter topping I could take or leave. Fish is, of course, perfect with chips and theirs are crunchy and fluffy and delectable.
To start, however, was the Kingklip and Prawn cake was dense and delicious. I'd never heard of Kingklip, and google tells me it's an eel and I say it's right up there with Conga Eel in subtle taste and texture.
Don't try the Cosmopolitans - they're eked out with sugar syrup or if they're not then the balance is all wrong, and they shouldn't bother dusting the rim with even more sugar...that's not how a cosmo is supposed to roll guys. So I switched to wine.
James convinced me to enjoy my afternoon watching people with a second glass, and so I did. And then I couldn't fit in desert, and was delighted to be presented with a little sorbet (more like icecream) flavored of strawberry which was a lovely little sweet finish to a pleasant couple of hours whiled away on a Saturday arvo.
Good value, good location, and great service (although they could all smile just a little more). The people...
