Ocean Basket Fourways Mall — Restaurant in Gauteng

My husband and I, visited this branch for a Saturday lunch. We were directed to our table quite quickly, we were then told that our waiter will be with us shortly. We then waited for 30-40 minutes before the waiter arrived to ask us what we wanted to drink.

15 minutes went by and we finally received the rolls and condiments - waiting another 10mins for our drinks. When our food arrived we were quite displeased at the portion sizes (we’ve ordered this dish many times and more or less know what to expect). My husband’s mussels were still frozen inside and tasted funny.

To make matters worse, the waiter from the next table spilled alcohol on the floor which splashed onto our clothing. That took another 10 min for them to clean - all the while we had to sit in the paddle and didn’t even have enough serviettes to clean our legs and shoes!

We informed the waiter that we were not happy with the food, and he just apologised. For some reason, there were two different waiters serving us - the one who took the order and the other who brought the food.

The Manager eventually came past and we told him about our experience so he reduced the mussels from our meal (hence the 2 star review) and apologised.

Apart from this; all the tables outside seem to be uneven, they are not clean, and people constantly walk up and down bumping your chair.

The establishment is located right after the food court opposite the cinema and the open plan give it a blissful breeze of fresh-air on a nice summer’s day. Now, as for the food, the sushi was below par and I failed to enjoy it. It tasted blend, not sure if it was the old ingredients or inexperienced sushi chef but either way, a huge improvement needs to be made. The seafood platter on the other hand was delectable and thoroughly enjoyed it. It had a mixture of prawns, baby squid, rice, fries and calamari, and, the sauce spread was creamy and flavorful.

As for the service, the staff are welcoming but on this occasion the waiter that was assigned to us was a bit on the rude side. She would just shift our drinks, plates and cutlery without asking. This was the first time I left without adding gratuity, it was that bad. Don’t get me wrong, I have been to quite a few OBs over the years and they have good quality control. My guess is that one waiter is inexperienced when it comes to customer service, something that can be addressed and rectified.

Other than that, the restaurant is clean and I always enjoy coming back. The menu pricing is a bit on the high-side, I’m guessing it's because it's seafood. I will give them a rating of...
