Staff showed no respect to us as customers.

My girlfriend and I (coloured) walked into Paul's in a very good mood, we greeted the lady behind the ice cream counter politely and asked about the waffles, I ordered a waffle with 2 flavours and my gf, one with only one flavour. We sampled no more than 3 flavours between the 2 of us, and chose 2 of 3 we sampled, and then we preceeded to sit down, to wait for our order.

Then 10 white people walked in, in different groups... Each of them sampled at least 2 flavours each, the lady that served us, proceeded to take all 10 white people's orders, prepared all 10 white people's Ice creams, served all 10 white people their ice cream... Then called another lady to help her serve the 10 white people... Then 15-20 minutes later, after all the white people were served and laughing away, enjoying their ice cream... Did our original server mosey over to us to tell us... They suddenly don't have Waffles anymore. "her manager informed her that she doesn't have waffles"

Wouldn't the server tell the manager what stock they have and do not have?

Since we still wanted to experience Paul's ice cream, we opted to take the ice cream to go and order plain waffles from somewhere else... Server lady now suddenly doesn't have any take away containers for ice cream and wants to charge us R3, for each, unbranded milk shake container she's going to give us.

After 20 minute wait, serving all the white people first, Pauls still didn't want two coloureds to be seen with their take away containers... And still decided to charge us for the inconvenience.

Indifference? Incompetence? Or institutional racism? Either way, we wouldn't stand for...

I would like to start off by saying that some of the best ice-cream I’ve ever had, has been from Paul’s. But here’s where it gets a bit disappointing; Lately the ice-cream has been quite icy/watery. It’s not as creamy or decadent as it used to be. I don’t know if load-shedding or refrigeration has been an issue, but it’s really not good enough for premium ice-cream at that price point. I get that quirky names for ice-creams are fun and playful for some, but I find it annoying when most of the ice-creams are not labelled by flavour or ingredients. It means that you have to ask what each flavour is, and while that’s probably okay, when the line of people behind you gets a bit longer, you feel a bit hesitant to do this. I remember a time when ice-cream displays were decadent and eye-catching. I don’t know if I always go at the wrong times, but most of the containers are at 20-40% capacity. It just looks empty and sad. Lastly, but importantly. I find that you are either understaffed or that staff are not properly trained. There always seems to be a mismatch of patrons to staff, who can serve the ice-cream and handle transactions. This becomes a problem when you have customers who want to sample every flavour available, while other customers are waiting to pay for their ice-cream.

I love the brand and the ice-cream, on occasion have been superb, but it’s becoming very inconsistent and amateurish for the price you pay. It’s just not world...

The staff also could be nicer. They have a good selection. I havent tried their waffles etc because they didnt have milk when i wanted to.

Edit Feb 2022

Super impressed. So impressed they have become nicer. They have improved. The staff were excellent excellent excellent. I had to do this review today itself.

I love the vibe! The coffee store next door adds to it but Gosh this place is buzzing! I could just sit here and be happy with the vibe! I might have even sat down with some random strangers and caught up on random stuff thats how amazing the buzz is!

Mind you, i still think Paul is arrogant, but the staff made this store like the shizz! Im so impressed im thinking waffles for breakfast!

Such a neighborly feeling. Kids running around, people talking, doggos getting their pup snacks, what more happy could you find! Super happy with this place! Waffles- amazing. Ice- Cream, Amazing! Cones and wafers- amazing! All really good. Thanks so much for this high that i came out with! I honestly wanted to stay but duty calls. Love you guys so much. Hats off to the staff today. Your level of...

Unfortunately gone are the days where i had Vietnamese Coffee and Oreo at the food and wine show 12 years ago and honestly thought it was the best ice cream in the world.. I was that person that used plan my dinners to be close to a Pauls so i could get my Pauls fix after dinner.. I had the flavour of the month:Vanilla and fudge. All marketing had some sort of golden fudge sauce(see Instagram), but it was just vanilla with cheap fudge pieces. The ice cream i had left an off milk taste in my mouth. The texture was not creamy and felt like it was frozen for too long and kind of tasted like chunky flavoured milked iced shavings(gosh i miss those days where you would dig your spoon into the cup and the ice cream would melt away in your mouth and not break away into many pieces. I think Pauls has taken a commercial route at the expense of quality.. I hope they can up their game because i can see another Wakaberry looming and the final slow death of Pauls.. P.S Baglios is my new favourite.you can do half scoops and get a free waffer. Lifelong Ice Cream Lover

I'm told that the "normal" dairy ice cream is good but it's really the vegan ice cream that I can talk about and it is out of this world. I don't know how they do it but this is definitely the creamiest and tastiest there is. There are several vegan options available like chocolate, mint and salted caramel but they sell out so fast and usually only have chocolate available if you're lucky. I haven't tried it yet but they also do vegan waffles that they make from coconut milk. Oh, and service is friendly and pretty quick too with plenty of payment options including Snapscan and Zapper.

What an incredible ice cream! The range is so extensive and has the best flavours under the sun! The staff turnover was quick, friendly and extremely efficient. The birthday cake flavour sounds a bit much, but once you taste it you won't be able to get enough. With all things popular it's tough with seating, but if you want to walk off the carbs while you eat - nothing better than to roam the very festive street. Interesting fact - dog snacks - who would of thought. Beneficial - once you become a fan and lover of Paul ice cream, you can buy boxes of it and take it home with you.
