Read moreI got a Motherdough starter (Alfonsina) during lockdown (Covid) and she has become another pet who I bath and feed and take care of, so was super excited to see the MD store in Franschhoek on our last visit. We bought a Classic white bread as it's probably the most common one I bake, so wanted to compare. It's a perfectly baked bread and so it should be at R70 a loaf, but it just tasted like a really nice loaf of bread... missed the sourness I get from mine and frankly, I think mine is tastier... We then tried the ham and cheese pastry and an almond croissant. Guess both are made from discard... Eish... neither were any good. The ham and cheese was stodgy, had the weeest piece of ham sticking out the top and a tiny blob of cheese. Very disappointing at R70. The croissant was even worse. Basically hollow inside with a few scrappy pieces of almonds, which all fell off as soon as I opened the bag. I was hoping for a bit of marzipan inside and I think there may have been, but I didn't have my microscope so couldn't see it, let alone taste it. At just over...

We had the chocolate Croissant and the mascarpone and Nutella something or other with a funny name but it was like a vetkoek. Delicious, both of these items. A little pricey here but that's probably because it's Franschoek. The croissant was R70 and the other bun thing R80.
The Mocha coffee was a litttle bit of a disappointment because it said it was made with 70% dark chocolate but it really didn't taste like it had the chocolate in it.
