Nestled in the heart of Franschhoek, Motherdough is a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth or a penchant for perfectly crafted sourdough. This charming bakery offers a delightful array of pastries, cakes, and breads, all made with the utmost care and using the finest ingredients. The star of the show at Motherdough is undoubtedly their sourdough bread. Each loaf is a work of art, with a crust that is both crispy and chewy, and a crumb that is soft and airy. The flavor is complex and satisfying, with a tanginess that is balanced by the sweetness of the dough. Whether you enjoy it toasted with butter and jam or as part of a hearty sandwich, the sourdough bread at Motherdough is sure to impress. Beyond their exceptional sourdough, Motherdough also boasts a tempting selection of sweet treats. From flaky croissants and buttery pain au chocolat to decadent chocolate cakes and fruit tarts, there is something to satisfy every craving. The pastries are beautifully presented and taste as good as they look. The atmosphere at Motherdough is warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or a quick coffee break. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they are always happy to answer any questions you may have about the menu. If you find yourself in Franschhoek, be sure to pay Motherdough a visit. You won't be...

I got a Motherdough starter (Alfonsina) during lockdown (Covid) and she has become another pet who I bath and feed and take care of, so was super excited to see the MD store in Franschhoek on our last visit. We bought a Classic white bread as it's probably the most common one I bake, so wanted to compare. It's a perfectly baked bread and so it should be at R70 a loaf, but it just tasted like a really nice loaf of bread... missed the sourness I get from mine and frankly, I think mine is tastier... We then tried the ham and cheese pastry and an almond croissant. Guess both are made from discard... Eish... neither were any good. The ham and cheese was stodgy, had the weeest piece of ham sticking out the top and a tiny blob of cheese. Very disappointing at R70. The croissant was even worse. Basically hollow inside with a few scrappy pieces of almonds, which all fell off as soon as I opened the bag. I was hoping for a bit of marzipan inside and I think there may have been, but I didn't have my microscope so couldn't see it, let alone taste it. At just over...

A great little gem of a place in Franschoek.

We had the chocolate Croissant and the mascarpone and Nutella something or other with a funny name but it was like a vetkoek. Delicious, both of these items. A little pricey here but that's probably because it's Franschoek. The croissant was R70 and the other bun thing R80.

The Mocha coffee was a litttle bit of a disappointment because it said it was made with 70% dark chocolate but it really didn't taste like it had the chocolate in it.

Their breads are all sourdough and looked...

We had an amazing breakfast experience at MotherDough Bakery in Franschhoek. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with the aroma of freshly baked bread filling the air. The croissants and sourdough were perfectly crisp yet soft inside, and the coffee was smooth and rich. Service was friendly, attentive, and added to the charm of the visit. The outdoor seating offered a lovely spot to relax and enjoy the morning. A must-visit for anyone looking for quality breakfast and artisanal bakery treats!
