I think perhaps my perspective of 1842 maybe be incomplete or maybe bias. I have not been to 1842 during regular hours/business to experience it in its natural setting... We went there when the venue was booked for an event. This is the part where I am uncertain as to whether my displeasure stems from poor planning/execution or the venue itself. Our food was more than an hour late. The starters were cold. Our main course also took long to arrive only to be presented with not so cooked lamb (with raw white fat). Chicken was also a tad pink in the middle. The waitstaff were completely thrown off by the term 'dry red wine' and had to call the manager who then informed them that Cabernet Sauvignon and the Merlot they had on tap was what was being referred to. No biggie. My fault for not being specific. That's on me. Though, they were very nonchalant about the raw food and the table's complaints about the food. But hey, they are just the messengers, we can't criticize them so much.
I don't know, I didn't enjoy my time. But I would love to give it another try again someday....
Read moreMaybe we picked the wrong day to visit (it was a public holiday), the place was empty the whole time we've been sitting there (for about an hour). Odd, given that the place is facing the busy Itaewon-ro road and is 5 minutes away from Hankangjin metro station and even closer to a bus stop.
We ordered a few things to try with our Korean friends - Czech sausage, tatarák, guláš and štrůdl. The sausage was exquisite. It really reminded me of home. Tatarák came with fried rye bread and garlic, as it should. 🤤 I'm positive that the štrůdl wasn't home made. Was expecting apple štrůdl, not a cherry pocket. The guláš was the weakest. The problem is that there's so many guláš recipes, and this one just didn't suit my taste. The interior, which was just like any other restaurant, no Czech music, place was like a ghost town... Made for a...
Read moreIt is a hidden gem in Itaewon, specializing in Czech and rustic European provincial cuisines. This is the Czech ambassador’s favorite restaurant. I recommend Koleno Set with Pork Knuckle, Sausage, Beef Goulash Stew served with Sauerkraut and Fries. It looks good and tastes good as well. Tatarak (Czech Beef Tartare) was so so. It showcases Pilsner Urqueff & Kozel beers. I tried Dark Kozel Beer and it was quite different, dense but sweet with cinnamon. It has good ambience with cozy interior. Even though it is located in the L1 floor, it presents good view over the Hannan area. Parking should be done at the Hannam public parking lots...
