Arrived from a red-eye and found their branch in Jeodong/Chungmuro (near the Starbucks on the corner) whilst wandering around the Myeongdong area!
Definitely a great find as it was fascinating to see the place run by elderly Korean people, which was very sweet to see. They thought we were Chinese and spoke Chinese to us, and I believe they thought we were Chinese until we left (due to I guess the tourists in the area normally being chinese) and suspected that all our attempts to say otherwise wasn't understood since their English might not be the best.
Even though there were evident language barriers, it was still a pleasant enough experience that we returned a few times after the initial meal as the food was so suitable and comforting in the cold weather, and was very very cheap for what you got! Their stew was around $7AU on the menu that would easily have been $25 back in Australia, and my favourite pick from this place, the seafood pancake (?pajeon) was only $8AU and would've definitely been +20$ back in AU for the portion size and amount of seafood in it. It being open 24/7 also meant that after a long day of touring around, it was nice to just have the option of a comforting meal and a quiet 10 minute stroll to and from!
I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go and eat there again but definitely would go in if I happen to go past either of their shops whilst walking around! A very...
Read moreWalked into this restaurant not knowing much of what to expect. There were no regrets though. It's a typical local restaurant where there seems to be more locals than tourists. So we stood out literally but that's fine with us. We ordered too much for two, starting with pork and potato stew (a huge pot enough for 3 or 4), half a portion of pork leg and egg roll, with a bottle of Shoju to complete the meal, which complimented very well with the food. The stew was good, soup base was good and tasty. The meat bones were large but had limited meat on them. Vegetable was plentiful. The appetizers were normal. The pork leg was nice (m a little prejudice here) esp if eaten with the accompanying kimchi. The egg roll was plain unfortunately. We love the atmosphere of the place, a little noisy and cheerful like a good lov dining place should be. We enjoyed the dinner. Price wise? Was expected for myeondong area which is a little higher than...
Read moreI was looking for a place in Myeongdong that was open after 10 p.m. and came across this restaurant. The first floor was crowded, so we were seated on the second floor. We ordered a small gamjatang (pork bone potato stew), pork backbone soup, and chapagetti. It was my first time trying gamjatang, and the potatoes were a bit firm and didn’t absorb much flavor—I wonder if that’s how it’s supposed to be. I had imagined soft, well-seasoned potatoes like in nikujaga (Japanese meat and potato stew), so it was a bit surprising. The soup was spicy, and the meat was tender and delicious. Gamjatang and the pork backbone soup were quite similar, so in hindsight, I should have ordered something...
