An all time favourite bakery and coffee-shop for locals and visitors. Puiggros is a traditional, family-owned business that maintains the convivial atmosphere of old-time catalan l9cal bakeries. Very popular with families and groups if friends and tourists alike, it remains a place mostly frequented by a local crowd of neighbours and city dwellers. Service is quick and a mix of over-the-counter and table service if your order tskes longer to prepare. Theres a bakey section and a typical caffee bar for hot meals, salafs and the usual coffee and sandwiches. Carrot cske is exquisite, croissants with ham and cheese also very good and popular, snd they also have small menus of salad and tortillla, piafinas, sandwiches and fried eggs and bacon with tomato bread. It is my first time to Barcelona and there was a lot of food choices around but this felt more inviting so I came here. The owner is a very charming, friendly and patient man who spoke several languages and greets every customer in the same warm manner. He patiently explained the menu and recommended the best food I have tasted so far since arriving in Spain. The dishes sound simple but the flavours are big. I wanted to let him know how much I truly appreciated the food he made but customers were coming in so I hope he will know of my thanks here. I had the horchata (which I did not know was only drank in summer!), torrada page (jamon iberico) and ensalada (salad with cheese, nuts, almonds, olive oil). A very nice cafe with an artisan feel to it. Great coffee and pastries and reasonably priced. I only have one criticism of this place and it relates to the payment system.

The owners of the café don't seem to trust their employees. The cash register is essentially an automated system. You're told how much your order comes to, you pay the shop assistant who then feeds your money into the till. The till then automatically calculates the change and the employee returns this to you.

Sounds ok, right? But it's so time consuming! On top of that, the till sometimes doesn't except your money if your notes are creased or the corners folded. So much for the...
