Read moreFirst time visitors to Barcelona, we chose Moncho's after looking at the establishments on the seafront, because we were not accosted outside the restaurant, and because an attractive "meal of the day" was offered at €18.00 per person, including mixed Paella. We were shown upstairs by a friendly, well spoken and cheerful member of staff, who sat us in a very pleasant window position with a superb view. The meal consisted of a mixed seafood salad starter with a platefull of floured and fried mixed fish, a huge pot of mussels and a very attractively presented mixed salad. All utterly fresh and delicious. The mixed Paella was perfectly cooked; sticky rice with a superb selection of seafood, pork etc.plus the often missing crust on the pan so loved by the Spanish gourmet. The portion was such that we were doubtful about coping with the pudding - a crema catalana. However, curiosity got the better of us and we were not disapointed in any way as it was superb. We left the choice of wine to the waiter and took the house white, which was suitably matched to the meal. The staff were at all times, pleasant, informative, well dressed and cheerful, and the seating area was clean, tidy and not too closely arranged, with an "al fresco" area for the more hardy (in May). I cannot recall enjoying such a wonderful meal including a bottle of wine and tip for €50 anywhere in Europe, and would be happy to recommend Moncho's unreservedly. It was the highlight of our short but...
Read moreTraumatising experience. I went to this bar with a hostel during some solo travel, so not knowing anyone very well, no phone signal or data in Spain. I went to order a drink, BEFORE they poured the drink I found out it was Crazy expensive so I said I didn't want it based on the cost. He had mis understood what I had ordered and I did not want it. His anger was unacceptable. He had not even poured it, at the time he hadn't even got the drinks off the shelves. He proceeded to kick me out, I was alone, no time to see anyone. I kept asking what was happening and no one was speaking in English. I was extremely stressed as I didn't do anything to warrent such a response. Eventually one of the wait staff spoke English and kindly translated my confusion. I was very stressed and there was a lot of Spanish, eventually when they understood they spoke to the man, he still refused to let me in. I even offered to pay for the drinks which I didn't want to stay so I wouldn't be stuck as a solo female in a city I don't know without phone signal. Eventually they agreed to let me back if I bought a few extortionate drinks. Frankly this is unacceptable and these drinks were bought through cohersion. I will never go back and I really reccomended everyone to avoid. Most of the other staff were friendly and reasonable, but this traumatised me. I should say later in the night he tried to make it up to me with 2 free shots. This was a horrible experience and really...
