Listen, I don't throw the word "divine" around lightly — I reserve it for holy experiences and really good churros. But Cafe Magerit in Madrid? That place is a full-blown religious awakening in tapas form.
First off, the vibe. Imagine your coolest Spanish abuela opened a café, handed the keys to her effortlessly charming grandson, and then sprinkled the whole place with cozy chaos and espresso magic. You walk in and bam — it's warm, welcoming, buzzing with locals, and somehow smells like coffee, grilled ham, and good decisions.
Now, the food. ¡Madre mía! Their tortilla española is a fluffy, golden dream that makes you question every life choice that didn’t involve eating more tortilla. The jamón? Cut so perfectly thin it practically dissolves like a savory prayer on your tongue. Don’t sleep on the bocadillos either — these sandwiches are tiny love letters from Iberia wrapped in crusty bread.
And the coffee? Oh honey, they don’t mess around. It’s bold, strong, and frankly, more dependable than my last three relationships. Get the cortado. Trust me. It’ll slap you awake in the best way possible.
Prices are shockingly reasonable for how good the food is, which made me briefly suspect I was in a dream — but then the server winked, and I knew it was real life. That staff? Charming, fast, funny, and somehow always right there when your glass hits half-full.
Bottom line: If you're in Madrid and don’t swing by Cafe Magerit, I’m judging you — lovingly, but firmly. Go there. Order everything. Send me a...
Read moreIf I can give it 0 stars I would. The service was not good. Our waitress did not smile once nor greet us properly. Unfortunately it was my boyfriend and I’s last meal in Madrid until we returned home overseas and made the unwise decision of dining at Magerit. The nachos we ordered to share were very mediocre and it seemed like they used canned cheese and not real cheese. (Something I can buy at a Met game. Not worth 10 euros). Worst nachos I’ve ever had. My plate was the grilled vegetables and I tried giving it the benefit of the doubt but I couldn’t some of the vegetables were way too salty for anyone’s liking and they seemed like they applied half a bottle of olive oil on it. They were soggy but tasted ok. My boyfriend’s meal was the worst. He is a man of simplicity and can eat about anything. His paella’s rice was not cooked well at all and it felt like it needed to stay on the stove for longer. The shrimp had a very “disgusting” taste according to him. Clearly not cooked well either. He felt ill after the meal. We’ve had inexpensive meals for a lot less for what that restaurant charged us so whatever you do save yourself the money and eat somewhere else but do your research because there are a lot of other good...
Read moreWe traveled to Madrid for the first time and found Cafeteria Magerit in the Plaza Mayor. We walked the entire Plaza deciding which restaurant to try, and were glad we chose this one. The menu had plenty of options to choose from and the food was tasty. We have our kids with us and our server, Alberto, made sure they were taken care of... even as the picky eaters they are. He was very attentive, went out of his way to engage with our son who has Down syndrome (landing first bumps and smiles), took our picture, and made sure everything about our experience was memorable for the right reasons. We would definitely recommend Cafeteria Magerit for the location, food, and excellent...
