September 11 The owner replied to my review of September 10 (see below) and I truly appreciate that.
I understand the need for reservation. The previous night (Saturday) the entire square was packed with people and I knew I would not get a table as a single person. However, on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 there were three empty tables at this restaurant when I was asked to leave. I found a table at another restaurant 10 metres away and the three tables remained empty for the duration. As I said below three young men were seated without a reservation as I was leaving therefore the issue wasn't a reservation. I was never even given the option of ordering food. The staff especially the outdoor cafe manager were very curt to the point of rudeness. Staying at the Hotel Catalonia Peurta del Sol the difference in service is night and day.
In my entire life (senior citizen) I have never experienced anything like this.

On Sunday September 10 I stopped and sat at a table in the outdoor Cafe. I was immediately told that I had to leave because I had no reservations. There were four empty tables. I was told the tables were for lunch only. I pointed out that the gentlemen at the next table only had drinks…there was no response. As I was leaving 3 three men took a table and were served. I politely asked if they had reservations and they said NO. Absolutely rude treatment

Read moreCame for dinner as a group of 6 after booking a table with locals. The waitress has been chasing us to order while never taking a minute to recommend us at all. Not one smile. After we have been deciding for 15 minutes, half of the wines and the dishes menu were not available. The red wine bottle we paid 35€ arrived fridge cold. Not ideal. Patatas bravas were absolutely tasteless, only very spicy. It took another 45mins to bring the other 2 tapas we had ordered, both of which were again, below the standards of any local taverna. We then ordered more food and after another 30 minutes had gone by and we were quite disappointed already, we kindly requested the bill. The waitress became instantly defensive while we were trying to be understanding and calm. The manager also came over and was quite rude, not listening to our point of view at all and being quite unapologetic. The bill arrived and we have paid 85€ for a bottle of wine, 6 croquetas, 1 plate of patatas bravas and 1 very bad callo. Ridiculous, touristy and far from being authentic as they claim to be. Most of the positive reviews online are clearly asked for by the staff, trying to minimise the impact of their bad service and food.
Stay away and rather go to the many amazing and traditional...
Read moreGreat location but the service was just awful from start to finish.
We wanted to have dessert and a bottle of wine and a gentleman seated us; however, when the waitress asked what we wanted she became agitated. We explained her colleague had seated us which only seemed to upset her more.
She moved us to a small table and we ordered a bottle of wine and a piece of cake. Guess what? She seemed annoyed. Why? Because the wines by the glass were on a cart outside and the bottles were inside. She clearly didn't want to make the walk.
Finally, we asked for the check and she basically disappeared. For 20 minutes (maybe more). We finally walked the empty bottle to the NH hotel desk (it is attached and we were staying there) and asked them to add it to our room bill.
A really bizarre service experience. We were in Madrid 3 days and the service everywhere else was good/great.
And the cake? ...
