Lateral — Restaurant in Madrid

First off; regardless of how someone's treated, patrons should always be respectful if they want to be treated respectfully, it's something I stick to. I say this to make a point that we had bad service even though we treated the staff respectfully and kept a smile through it all.

Staff: Cold and not attentive, we had to ask for our bill from another waiter. We ordered items that never made it then we were charged for some of those items. This was some of the worst service we've had. However, it seemed everyone else was being taken care of in a timely manner.

Ambience: The place looks and vibes well!

Food: Presentation was great, but the food wasn't. The first round was the chicken quesadilla - processed & frozen chicken but the sauce was good. Next round was the gazpacho, which seemed good (first time we tried it). After that chicken pita with curry sauce - the chicken was ground (meh) but again, the sauce was good. Veg lasagna - no noodles, so it was simply ratatouille with cheese on top. The meatball never came. The apple blueberry crumb was lukewarm at best.

Price: For what we ordered plus two waters and two wines - it was €33.

I had read good things about Lateral and my experience did not disappoint! I arrived at 20:30 so the whole square was very busy. I asked the hostess if I could take a free table— she said she was actually managing a queue for the outdoor seating (and there was one other couple ahead of me), so if I would like to sit at the bar inside and enjoy a drink, she would come and find me as soon as a table opened up. I enjoyed an Aperol Spritz at the beautiful marble bar, and sure enough before I was finished, Irene, the hostess, beckoned me with a smile to show me to my table. Juan José took care of me over dinner and very sweetly agreed to help me practice my Spanish and I ordered. The tapas came quickly and was super delicious and well portioned! I visited Lateral Restaurant with high expectations, excited to try their tapas, but I was very disappointed. The tortilla was completely cold, and the combination of truffle, potato, and egg was also cold and lacked any appeal. Additionally, the egg had an unpleasant smell, which made it hard to enjoy.

I also ordered the octopus, but it was so poorly marinated and tasteless that I couldn’t eat it. The only thing I found somewhat acceptable was the toasted bread with tomato, which didn’t require much effort as it seemed like a simple prepared item. The artichoke dish was decent but extremely oily.
