We were there around 6:30 pm. today. There was a long line up when we joined, the maitre d asked the number of people in each party. There were 2 of us. After waiting for 15 minutes or so, it was our turn, my companion left for the washroom before that so it was just me on the line. The maitre d all of a sudden started freaking out in Spanish, apparently she accused me of jumping the line and that I have to line up. I was speechless but I heard her told the Filipina waitress to talk to me an 'Indio' since we speak the same language. I was so shocked to be treated that way, I've never been treated in such a racist way not even in Canada where I lived for decades. This woman (a Spanish woman with tattoos in her right arm) needs to have diversity training. "Indio" is a derogatory word, an equivalent Spanish N word for Filipinos. If you show this attitude in Canada, you'd be fired. There is no room for this kind of attitude especially in a service industry. I put 2 stars because the food didn't...
Read moreOn many people's to do list visiting Spain is authentic churros con taza, churros with chocolate. Valor is a well established brand, you can buy it in the supermarket to bring home. We visited on a beautiful warm summer evening and sat outside enjoying the vista. It wasn't difficult to get a table and we didn't have any difficulty getting service. We got 3 drinks to share between 5 of us and that was probably too much, they are very filling. Go for more churros less taza is my suggestion. The hot chocolate is less sweet than the British palate may be used to so bear that in mind particularly visiting with kids who may find it a bit strong. Churros do not contain eggs and if you want allergy information I was able to find this on valor website before our visit in an easily accessible pdf. This meant no worries with language barrier in the cafe. We really enjoyed our experience and this cafe was nicely located within the shopping district of Madrid. Great...
Read moreWaited outside in the rain and after seeing people in the queue being asked by the seater who wanted a seat at the bar or on the terrace to avoid waiting, and there being about five empty tables outside I went in to see what sitting at the bar looked like, decided against it, and asked a barman if I could sit outside. He said "go right ahead" and I proceeded to sit at one of the free tables at the terrace where a waiter told me that I couldn't sit there, I had to wait the queue (which was now more than double) and that what the barman had said "did not count" and that I should be seated by the person at the door, who was nowhere to be found. And I had to start the queue all over. The disorganisation and lack of communication is apalling.
I live 5 minutes away been trying to go about once a year to see if there's any improvement and every time I give them another chance I regret it.
Not a friendly experience....
