The drinks were great, but the food and the hospitality was not.
We read the reviews about Amicis and decided to chance a drop in, since we did not have a reservation. When we arrived, the greeter stated he didn't think he could seat us, but soon thereafter, he found us a seat on the terrace. We were soon seated, but shortly after we were told by the server that the table was reserved, and we needed to leave. We explained that the greeter seated us, and we didn't seat ourselves. The server, Jesus, said "ok", but then there was a big debate between the greeter, the server, and the manager, which included some rather sour glances our direction. When the server returned, we apologized profusely for any inconvenience, but it didn't seem to matter. From that point forward, we were met with clipped and cool responses, ignored, and left sitting for long periods with empty plates and empty glasses. In hindsight, we should have got up and left, but we did not want to appear like the "typical entitled Americans". And, since this was our last night in Madrid, we kept a positive vibe. After all, it's still Madrid.
As in other reviews, the drinks here are pretty solid. We found the food to be a different experience. The guacamole and croquettes were delicious, but the entrées were underwhelming. The goat cheese pair salad was bland, and the ham in it was tough. The mixed board was very sparse with cuts of meat, when compared to nearby restaurants we visited.
I will say, to make this review a little more fair, they were pretty busy. AND, the manager put our server in a difficult position of adding a top, and then not getting him any additional help. Maybe next time our experience...
Read moreWe went to Amici with high expectations. It was a recommendation online and seeing the reviews we were excited. People recommended the croquettes and they did live up to expectations. They were very tasty. However, the remaining of our experience was disappointing. We ordered the Amici Burger and the Sea Bass as our mains. Both dishes had problems that go beyond an already existing mismatch between the taste and price. The sea bass fillet was full of bones. Having one or two pieces of bone is okay as people can miss them while deboning, however, while eating the fish we found multiple larger bones that could have been taken out and, when eating they not only made the experience worse but dangerous as they could easily puncture the inside of the mouth, and it did when it punctured my partner’s tongue. The burger also had hard pieces of what seemed like bone fragments in it. If I had not paid attention while chewing they could have easily chipped a tooth. I have never seen this in a burger before. Our experience in the restaurant was so unusual that it pushed us to write review when we usually wouldn't. I would recommend to avoid this restaurant at all costs or just take the croquetes to go and be...
Read moreDecided to come to Plaza Mayor with my parents, husband and two kids under 5 based on a recommendation from a friend. There are a ton of restaurants here especially in the middle of the plaza which should be avoided in my opinion, not based on experience but based on personal preference. In short , this area smells bad. So...we looked up Amicis (rated #1) on TripAdvisor, booked a reservation and navigated our way over. The restaurant is a bit hidden (our google maps was not accurate) but worth the effort to find. The place is clean and well kept. There is outdoor and indoor seating but we had a bigger party so we were required to sit inside (outdoor dining is slightly higher in price). It was a bit warm inside but not unbearable. The food is not pretentious but refined so everyone in our party was catered to, even the kids. Burgers, fish, and steaks were all great! Manuel was very attentive, accommodating and made great recommendations. Oh and makes wonderful Caipirinhas! Definitely request him! We...
