Sarangbang - The peak of appalling, shameful dining experiences
i. Summary ii. Food review iii. Service iv. Price v. Final verdict
i. Summary The food is nothing more than mediocre with average to appalling service, and you could say it is not worth the price as I’ve had Korean fast food and chain restaurants that were comparably better than Sarangbang. As a Korean and food aficionado, I definitely do not recommend this restaurant.
ii. Food review Jeyukbokkeum (comes with rice) Rating: 3/5 Elaboration: It was even mentioned in the menu, but the spice level was much too low for this dish, and instead, it was quite sweet; however, it was still flavourful and not bad
Kalbi (comes with rice) Rating: 1/5 Elaboration: The beef was a disgrace to the entire Korean community. The beef was too hard for any human to chew and felt like I was eating rocks that it felt inedible
Sundubu (comes with rice) Rating: 4/5 Elaboration: Surprisingly, this was good enough, and it matched the distinct taste and flavour, albeit it was not as hot as it should have been when we had it delivered to our table
Sundae Rating: 1/5 Elaboration: The sundae from this shop was too dry and did not come with salt and pepper which usually comes together with the dish
Banchan (a.k.a. Side dishes) Rating: 2/5 Elaboration: There was an abundance of side dishes as you would expect in a Korean restaurant; however, majority were not up to standard. The staple - kimchi, was again, too dry, and all the dishes only arrived once we got our first ordered meal when it should have been placed from the beginning as usual
Sangria Rating: 4/5 Elaboration: The sangria was not too dry or too sweet, so it was pleasantly enjoyable
Wine Outside drinks are not allowed
iii. Service The service from waiters and the manager/owner (uncertain) were terrifyingly different. Firstly, the waiters were average at best. While they were helpful and waiter Y being slightly more eager to serve and more friendly, they were not the most experienced, which caused misunderstandings and there were slight language barriers as well. When we asked for the wine menu, waiter X said they sold out and they didn’t have a menu, and said we could bring our own, so we went to buy a bottle of wine. He later told us they actually had house wines left but we’d already bought it, and he proceeded to help us open the bottle. Soon after, when we were already drinking the wine and began eating, waiter X informed us that we were actually not allowed to bring our own. This brings me to my next point, which is the hypocritical manager/owner. All he seemed to do was stay by the counter idle the entire time, and he was extremely unfriendly, unless you were there for business. When we wanted to speak to him about the wine misunderstanding, he refused to leave his little den of a counter and we had to walk over to clarify things. Even when speaking to him in Korean and being extremely polite, he was very unfriendly and did not apologise, even though this was clearly not a fault on our part. He then proceeded to scold waiter X in front of us which we felt was not giving a good impression and demoralising staff. During the remainder of our dining, he kept glancing over with an annoyed expression on his face and “gossiping”about us to the co-owner (?), which made us feel extremely uncomfortable and scrutinised. when we left, he did not acknowledge us one bit, so I would say his service was atrocious.
iv. Price The price itself was not too bad, but with the quality and service, it is not worth your money.
v. Final verdict I will definitely not return and will not...
Read moreThe food were delicious and the cold noodle was very refreshing for summer. They serve many varieties of banchan and it all taste good (apart from the kimchi which taste was similar to the one bought in the asian grocery store..but maybe that's just me). We also ordered chicken in soy sauce that tastes great but so hard to eat with chopsticks or fork and knife because it has bones, that would be perfect without bones though. We also hope there could be more dishes with beef than pork. Overall, we are satisfied with the kind service, delicious taste, and not forgotten to mention : the reasonably priced meal. We will...
Read moreA restaurant that puts Korean food to shame Tasteless food, overpriced and too small portions. 4 people ordered, but there was less than 2 servings. Messy service, narrow and dirty interior. BTS photos were hung and plastered at the entrance in an unsophisticated manner. Probably because he wasn't confident, he tried to use bts-coin. But it was really embarrassing to see the service being so messed up. The worst store that only rides the trend of the Korean Wave and has no competitiveness at all. I've talked to the store owner, but his mindset and conversational attitude are...
