I stopped by Taberna Sidrería El Fontán recently and tried a couple of their tapas. I’d rate the overall experience 8/10: - Croquetas de chipirón (Squid croquettes): 8/10: Never tried squid croquette before, it was salty, squid ink added more flavour to it, and it was nice and worth trying - Lacón a la gallega (Pork shoulder Galician style): 7.8/10: Good pieces of pork. Went well with the wine. - Berenjenas con miel (Eggplant in tempura with honey): 8.3/10: Sweet, nicely battered and fried eggplants. Worth trying. - White Wine: Mara Martín. D.O. Monterrei. Godello: Light, slightly fruity - Sidra: Cortina: Not flavourful nor bubbly like the North American Ciders

We were here on Sunday morning, it was pretty busy when we got there at 11:15 am but when it got closer to noon, people started to clear out. I ordered the Spanish Breakfast (Spanish omelette, chistorra, natural tomato with toasted bread, orange juice and coffee) and my friend ordered the English breakfast (Fried or scrambled eggs, bacon, natural tomato with toasted bread, orange juice and coffee). Overall food was alright, the tomatoes were a bit too salty as well as the chorizo, the Spanish Omlette was amazing, looks like it had some cheese too. Also the service was great.

I visited here with a tapas tour and, as my first stop, I really enjoyed this spot. Huddled up on a large table with my group we sampled the Patatas bravas, padron peppers, croquettes and a soft northern Spanish blue cheese (creamy with a strong finish, maybe not for everyone but I liked it). My sangria was delicious and went down far too easily. I also sampled some of the cider they are known for, poured from a height by our waiter. Quite interesting to watch. Very bustling atmosphere, brightly lit and open feeling compared to some other bars.

I have been to Madrid many times, but I have never experienced such friendly service and such fresh, delicious food. Tinto de verano – delicious – just as it should be, tequila and 43 con piña the same. But what was truly unbelievable were the calamares fritos and croquetas. I was really surprised by the quality of the cuisine in this restaurant – unbelievably good food; I can honestly say that nowhere else have I eaten such excellent cuisine as here. Clean, fantastic service, with a genuinely warm and heartfelt approach to the customer. For me, this place is the definition of gastronomy. The way the staff treat their guests should be a model for other restaurants to follow.

We thank above for your hospitality and the warmth that comes straight from the heart. This place is a true role model and has created beautiful memories that we will remember for a long time – and we will definitely come back ❤️

Hidden gem! Everything ordered was super fresh and flavourful. I've eaten at Michelin star restaurants since I'm a foodie and this was a quality place. Octopus was super tender with flavourful eggs that had pieces of potato. The blue cheese croquettes had such amazing flavour, with apple sauce to balance it out. The blue cheese was not overpowering at all and made from a special region in Spain. The beef pie was really nice. I don't like doughy empanadas but this place had light pastry, nicely baked and fresh. Also got the Milanese schnitzel and that was super fresh too. Server was incredible dealing with traffic of New Year's Eve - he hustled, cranked out dishes, and tried to clear and organize tables. True professional 👌 Highly...

The food was really tasty, but the problem appeared in form of very strange restaurant manager, who at that day wanted to watch football match on TV. He set the volume to the highest, so he could hear everything outside the restaurant when he smoked a cigarette. After a few tries we manged to convince one of the waitresses to make TV a little bit quiet, but after a few minutes later, the manager returned to the restaurant and made the volume even more loudly than before. It's a shame, because besides us, there are a few other people who have come to Fontán Canalejas to eat and spent a nice time instead of sitting in a really loud place. A big, big pity. We will never...
