Mediocre Japanese Fusion. Service was unfriendly and pretentious. Trying too hard to be an upmarket restaurant. We were told that the only seating available was the patio. We said fine but when asked if they can put up an umbrella (the bases were already in place) first they said it might rain. When it was obvious it wasn’t going to rain (sunny with not much clouds) they said the umbrellas were being cleaned.
As for the food, we ordered quite a number of dishes… chilly crab, Cantonese noodles, Duck, foie and shiitake dim sum, Pork ribs glazed with Japanese barbecue sauce, scallop tataki with horseradish and iberico ham roll (maki), and finally a Crispy shrimp with yogurt, mustard and curry roll (maki).
Dishes were served randomly with hot food coming first (noodles, chilly crab and dim sum) followed by sushi and pork ribs. It would be infinitely better if they served first the “cold” dishes (sushi/maki) followed by the “hot” dishes.
Quality and flavour was mediocre at best. The duck dim sum was a poor attempt at Peking style duck with the dumplings over powered by way too much Hoisin sauce. The skin of the dim sum themselves were way too thin and broke easily when picked up. FAIL!
The Chilly crab had hardly chilly flavour and was served with a mediocre mayonnaise based sauce. The breading on the crab was heavy and reminiscent of poor quality fried foods you find at a stall.
The Cantonese noodles was again drowned in sauce and lacked the delicate flavours a restaurant that charges these prices should have.
The scallop tataki roll / maki was overpowered by the spring onions it had in the roll… more than half the roll was filled with spring onions with hardly a scallop in sight! Hours later I still have the after strong after taste of onion in my mouth!!
The crispy shrimp maki again was lacklustre and quite forgettable in taste and the pork rib was again heavily drowned in sauce that was quite monotone in flavour.
In addition to this it took them over an hour to serve us our rolls (it was the last dish that came out) and the restaurant was not even full. When I asked to cancel the last remaining dishes as it was taking so long they said it was being plated so I accepted it. Wrong decision!! In the end they offered us complimentary drinks (2 waters, a small beer, and a coke) as compensation to them taking so long. Not much of a gesture! We made a mistake of not leaving at the beginning!!
If you have even a little knowledge of Japanese food don’t bother going! In fact even if you don’t have knowledge of Japanese food, DON’T GO.
If you want decent sushi with great service and ambience go...
Read moreA Disappointing Experience at Arume
Dining at an upscale Japanese restaurant often promises an evening of culinary delight and impeccable service. Unfortunately, our recent visit to Arume was a stark deviation from this expectation, leaving us deeply disappointed.
Upon arrival, we were met with a cold reception. Rather than being graciously escorted to our table, a staff member curtly pointed to the back of the restaurant and said, "That's your seat." This initial encounter set a negative tone for the evening, one that continued to decline as the night progressed. The lack of guidance extended to the menu as well. Without any advice or recommendations from the staff, we navigated the menu on our own and decided to start with the spicy crab. Despite being warned about its spiciness, what arrived was an overcooked crab coated in a cheap breadcrumb mixture, drowned in an exceedingly bland sauce. It was neither spicy nor flavourful, making for a very underwhelming start.
Our second starter, the duck dim sum with orange sauce, fared no better. The combination of duck with an orange sauce felt outdated and failed to excite our palates. The sauce itself was unpleasant and did not complement the dim sum, leaving us regretting our choice.
The Arume Sashimi, a dish we had high hopes for, was served at room temperature rather than on ice. Sashimi should be served cold to preserve its freshness and texture, and this oversight was a glaring misstep that made the dish unappetising.
Given the succession of disappointments, we decided to cancel the other items we had ordered. The consistent lack of quality and attention to detail was disheartening, especially considering the premium prices. In conclusion, our experience at Arume was far from the luxurious and refined dining experience we had anticipated. The poor service, lackluster dishes, and overall neglect for customer satisfaction lead us to strongly advise against dining here. Save your time and money for a restaurant that truly values its patrons and delivers on...
Read moreArrived at the restaurant at 1.30pm. They told us indoor was fully booked and we could eat in the terrace even though the weather forecast was giving rain at 2pm. The sky had few white clouds. By 1.45pm the sun picked up with a temperature of 30 degrees, we asked for an umbrella but they told us they weren't going to put one out because, again, the forecast was giving rain. One hour later all sweat under a full sun we were still wanting for the rolls we ordered. Finally when we asked to cancel the order they arrived and surprise.....they weren't anything special neither that good to justify such a waiting. If you know a bit of Japanese or fusión food don't waste time coming to this restaurant. To apologize they offer us the drinks...2 small waters and a beer on a...
