Bar Ludeña — the birthplace of the legendary “carcamusas”, a saucy, meaty love story between tender pork, peas, and tomatoes. Locals whisper that this dish was first cooked up here in the mid-20th century, when hungry Toledians needed something hearty to soak up their wine…
Tucked into a centuries-old stone building in Toledo’s old quarter, Bar Ludeña oozes that classic Castilian charm of wooden beams, tiled floors, and the kind of walls that could tell stories about knights, poets, and probably one too many drunken sword fights. Legend has it the bar’s name honors a local family that served both tapas and trouble (depending on who you asked).
Inside, the energy is warm, loud, and authentically Spanish — locals clinking glasses, waiters zipping through narrow aisles with the confidence of matadors, and the heavenly aroma of simmering tomato and pork filling every corner. Order the Menu del Día with a choice of its Toledian carcamusas as the mains — rich, saucy, slightly spicy, and downright flirtatious. Pair it with a glass of local red, and you’ll swear Toledo just winked at you.
Sit by the bar if you want the full Toledian experience — that’s where the locals banter, gossip, and debate who makes the best carcamusas in town.
**The course meal comes with two breads in basket but if you want an extra it costs €1.20/each. Cerveza sin alcohol (0.0 alcohol beer) is available as choice of drink as part of the menu.
Choice of dessert: Flan / Arroz con leche (rice pudding)...
Read moreWe had a fantastic lunch at Bar Ludena. We timed it just right, when we arrived the bar was reasonably quiet (not long opened and still setting up for lunch), so we grabbed a beer and a tapas and sat on a tall table outside in the courtyard., This was going to be a short stop however as the place got busier and we continued to sample their food we stayed for a couple of hours and enjoyed every minute. The bar definitely specializes in stew style meals, things that are full of flavor and just give you a big hug. The salsa I had on the tortilla (from a bit vat behind the bar) was warm and spicy which really worked well with the tortilla texture. However without doubt the best dish was the crane con tomate - it was just amazing. So simple, just slow cooked pork, a few peas in a rich tomato sauce. I have had this in many towns and cities across Spain but this one was just better, I loved it. The portion sizes were generous and the prices were amazing. Loved it and if I am ever back in Toledo this will be my...
Read moreBrilliant choice. The food was excellent, well prepared and incredibly flavorful! We had the Salmorejo which was excellent however….the Carcamusas gave me goosebumps right after it hit my pallet. My eyes instinctively closed and I took a deep inhale…it was that good. The Flan de la casa wrapped it all up. The place is rightfully busy so the price of admission is waiting…but worth it. Have a drink at the bar to kill time. The staff were great. I appreciate that they let you enjoy your meal and your space and if you need them, just flag them down and they will get things done.! I am sad I am...
