Disappointing Experience at BIG Plate Restaurant
We recently visited BIG Plate Restaurant with high expectations, but unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing.
To begin with, the prices were unreasonably high for the quality of food served. We ordered two portions of their so-called “special mix rice” -Rs 7500 after being told it was the restaurant’s specialty. However, what we received was far from special. The rice was oily, bland, and had just a few poorly cooked vegetables—there was no chicken, beef, shrimp, or cuttlefish as one would expect from a "mix rice" dish. It didn’t taste fresh, and the portion size was also smaller than expected.
The service was equally underwhelming. The staff were slow and seemed uninterested in attending to customers. It took an unusually long time for our food to arrive, and no effort was made to ensure a pleasant dining experience.then they add service charge 10%- Rs1650 for no reason
Another major concern was the restroom and hand wash area. There were no separate facilities for men and women, which felt both uncomfortable and unhygienic. This is a basic standard that every restaurant should meet.
To be fair, the restaurant has a nice sea view and a well-designed interior with modern lighting and decor. However, while the ambiance is decent, it doesn’t make up for the poor food quality and bad service. At the end of the day, food is the heart of any restaurant, and if that’s not up to standard, everything else loses its value.
Overall, BIG Plate Restaurant was not worth the money. Poor food, slow service, and inadequate facilities—definitely not a place I would recommend. I will come again if you correct your mistakes I...

I had one of the worst dining experiences at this restaurant, which falsely claims to have the “best hygiene” in Marine Drive. The reality could not be further from the truth.
From the moment we walked in, we noticed something was off. The place looked unkempt, but we decided to give it a chance. Unfortunately, that was a huge mistake. As soon as our food arrived, we saw cockroaches crawling on the plates and on the food itself. It wasn’t just one or two—it was a full-blown infestation. Looking around, we saw cockroaches on the walls, floor, and tables. It was absolutely disgusting.
We then caught a glimpse of the kitchen when the door was left open, and it was a nightmare. The floors were filthy, utensils were scattered everywhere, and there was no proper organisation or cleanliness. It was clear that they have zero hygiene standards, despite their false advertising.
To make matters worse, the food was cold and tasted awful, making us question whether they even store or prepare their ingredients properly. It was an all-around health hazard.
What’s even more shocking is how they maintain their five-star rating online—they pay for positive reviews or offer free meals in exchange for good feedback. This is completely misleading and deceptive. Do not trust the high ratings!
If you value your health and hygiene, stay far away from this place. I would not be surprised if it gets shut down for serious food safety violations. Avoid...

I recently dined at Big Plate in Kollupitiya, and it was an absolute delight! The restaurant’s welcoming ambience—especially the first-floor outdoor seating with sea views—set the perfect tone for the meal. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home .
The food was the star of the show. I tried their Tower Burger, a towering masterpiece with crispy chicken, ham, cheese, and a spicy sauce that delivered a fantastic balance of flavors. Every bite was juicy and packed with savory goodness . The Chopsuey Mixed Rice was another highlight—perfectly saucy with a generous mix of vegetables and meat (though the beef could’ve been more tender) .
For drinks, the Curacao Blue was a smoky, refreshing spectacle with dry ice adding a fun visual twist—ideal for Colombo’s heat . The Shawarma also stood out, with tender meat and flavorful dips wrapped in soft pita bread, just like authentic Middle Eastern street food .
What truly impressed me was the value for money, especially the Mixed Platter, which offered a feast of tandoori chicken, fried beef, and dips at a reasonable price . Big Plate’s diverse menu (covering local, Chinese, and Indian cuisines) ensures there’s something for everyone.
A must-visit for anyone craving bold flavors in a vibrant setting! I’ll definitely be back to try their Fried Ice Cream next time ....
