Inspired by our four beautiful children (William, 6, Terrance, 4, Jessica, 3, and Darling, just 18 months), my wife and I have recently opted to cut down on red meat. It was with some apprehension then that we ordered primarily vegetarian dishes from this curious Chinese joint specialising in elevator music. Whilst perhaps the 'ambiance' at times left something to be desired (read above: elevator music), all in all it proves difficult to fault the experience. Quite simply, Shiwu is one of the finest culinary establishments in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. The buttered mushrooms were in fact battered, as was my wife a glass of cooling Lion lager. She never could handle her drink. That's actually what drew me to her in the first place. Anyway, we'd also highly recommend the eggplant, the egg noodles, and the king prawns. Do be on the lookout for those pesky whole chillies, however, they'll catch you out when you're least expecting it!! Just like my wife. Anyway, all the best to you, A deeply psychologically damaged middle aged...
Read moreI’m visiting Sri Lanka after many years and wanted to have a reunion with friends and Shiwu was the perfect place. They arranged a private dining area for us and helped me set up a fixed menu. Ms Hasheni who helped me set up a menu was a true professional who made excellent suggestions and was very attentive to my needs and was prompt in her responses to me via WhatsApp when I set it up from the US prior to my trip to Sri Lanka. Once I arrived, she was just as lovely in person as she was via text. A true professional who genuinely wants her customers to have an excellent overall experience at her restaurant. Our server for the night was Mr. Nawaz, a fine young man with a pleasant smile, who served my 13 very loud and excited guests and put them at ease. He was clearly well trained in hospitality and knew the proper serving etiquette, food hygiene and enhanced our overall experience. The entire staff takes pride in their work and go above and beyond to ensure the customers have a great...

We ordered mushroom dim sum, vegetable chow mein, and stir-fried broccoli.
I was indeed a bit disappointed with the dim sum because it was shaped like a mushroom, but there wasn't much mushroom inside—it was more covered with dough and had little filling. But again, I didn't know that's how it usually is.
The chow mein and steamed broccoli looked very healthy, as little tampering was done to them. They didn't have much salt or spiciness, but I believe that's how they're supposed to be, as we are very inexperienced with Chinese cuisine.
The hospitality was top-notch, and from time to time they asked about how we felt about the food.
They made sure it was prepared as pure vegetarian...
