A rather unpleasant experience.
The atmosphere is filled with nice decor, narrow hallways and basically sitting almost on the lap of other guests or the band (if playing). So, all good on this front. However, the obnoxious smell of too much parmesan on the food is not only going straight into your nose when entering, like a smack in the face, but also your clothes over the duration of the evening - something to take away, I guess.
The real problem with the place is, however, the very unpleasant staff. Pushing the guests to order more or more expensive items, making them move faster, pay faster, and overall it feels like a demeaning treatment. Granted, on a full night it can be stressful, but that is no excuse, and gathering insights from other reviews, this seems to be a reoccuring problem.
The menu itself is underwhelming as well, lacking alcohol free options (it's 2021, offer some alcohol free wine or bubbles and not just one beer/cider), the prices are slightly above standard around the area of Gothenburg, and the food is lacking vegetarian (vegan) options that are not just full of cheese.
The band at the night was pretty bad, despite the individuals being great musicians by themselves. They just couldn't play with each other, so it was more noise than jazz, but that's not the problem of the place. Just feel like mentioning it as well.
All in all a very unpleasant experience and far away from an inviting feeling, that the Gothenburg hospitality is so great for. Considering other reviews show similar points, I believe it wasn't an off-night, but rather a typical one.
My advice: avoid Unity Jazz if you want to have a good and pleasant experience, where you can feel like you can be yourself and enjoy the evening. If you want to feel somewhat mistreated, probably a good place. You do you, I don't judge. Maybe that's also jazz? I don't know.
All around Unity Jazz, there are plenty of superior bars and restaurants, and a better Jazz place is Nefertiti a few hundred...
Read moreCosy jazz club in central Gothenburg. The music was above expectations in a city that is not really known for its jazz culture. Really excellent musicians and decent acoustics. The staff were extremely service-minded and pleasant, and we felt taken care of both before and during the concert. Excellent job. Some reviewers complain about the high prices but to be honest I don't think it's unfair to pay a bit extra in exchange for a nice ambience and happy staff.
Why four stars and not five? I felt the food menu could be a bit more creative to make the experience perfect. The green beans with feta, the steak tartare and the grilled cheese sandwich were all decent but a bit boring. All the food on offer seemed quite quick and easy to make from the point of view of the kitchen staff, and that's fine! But I think Unity Jazz would be just perfect if they managed to find dishes that are simple to make but a bit more exciting than what they currently offer. Maybe croquetas? Fish and chips? Some more varied cold cuts? Unity Jazz does so many things well and I'll definitely be returning, but with a little bit more creativity they could be...
Read moreYou may call unity jazz a small and cozy restaurant with a jazz venue, but herein lies one of the issues with the place. The small room makes you sit right next to the scene and while it might be immersive to be right next to the musicians, that in combination with the small room can make the music way to loud if you have somewhat sensitive hearing like me.
The food I've had here has been ok, even if I think the quality of it is a bit on the low side for the price you pay.
The air quality of the venue is unfortunately quite bad. It'll get hot in there and when you come in from the outside you'll notice the smell. Hopefully it'll still be a good smell depending of what the kitchen is cooking, yet in my case it was too much. It could really benefit of better ventilation.
Unity Jazz supposed to be one of the better jazz venues in Sweden and while this might be true for the music itself, the other aspects of the venue leaves much to be desired.
Bear in mind that you also will have to pay the musicians separately when you're...
