Puta Madre — Restaurant in Göteborgs Stad

I had read mixed reviews of this place, and I now understand why.. It is more of a place where you bring a friend for some food and beers/tequilla, than a restaurant. The food is very good though, although a bit flat compared to real mexican cousin. The main problem for us was the service. We had a reservatiom, and when we came in they said we could just go upstairs and find a table. Very confusing as following you to a reserved table is common.. When we sat down it tok about 15 minutes before we where asked if we’d like anything to drink, but we had already decided for food and placed the order. It took 20 minutes before the food came (which is really not a bad thing!), but the waiter had completely forgotten the beers as she stood around doing other things and serving others. Maybe she had a long day or was new in her job, but all the waiting made us decide to just eat and go.We tried to make eye contact and give hints, but the waiters never looked our way so we just gave up in the end. We where in and out in around 45-50 minutes from we entered, where 40 of them was spent waiting for a beer.

Decor is very interesting, I’d like to go around the restaurant and look at all the stuff they have on display. Completely amazing selection of tequila and mezcal, so if that’s your thing, this place is quite peerless. And even if you know nothing about mezcal, the staff will set you right. Also a lot of choice and variation in terms of drinks, many interesting takes on classics. Unfortunately the food was only so-so. Had a ceviche, which was fresh and nicely tart, especially liked the use of buckthorn. But it wasn’t spicy, didn’t detect any chili at all. Same story for the tacos, all very nice and good, pork cooked well, pretty nice flavours overall, but no spice. For a place that on their menu says “all our dishes contain chili, garlic and coriander” it was a bit of a letdown there really wasn’t that much chili. Despite several members of the staff saying hi to me, we waited for a good while before being seated. Seating outside was impossible for an unknown reason. With ample vegan options I felt optimistic about the food. Despite clearly specifying vegan, I got my starter with loads of cheese sprinkled on top... I also asked for no fresh coriander which was ignored as well. The waitress spoke to us in Swedish repeatedly despite speaking English quite well. The music was like in a beach bar in Spain - great for dancing but did not fit the atmosphere at all (hips don't lie, etc.). The food itself was also a disappointment. The descriptions sounded delicious, in reality everything was greasy and additionally drenched in mayo.
