Time-travel, sausage, and a snappsgumma 🕰️🌭🥃
Eating at Tranan is like crashing a 1930s dinner party - one where the acoustics were designed by someone who hated silence. It’s not that people are screaming, it’s just that the space seems engineered to bounce every clink, laugh, and knife-on-plate sound straight into your brain 🧠🔊. And weirdly... it kind of works. It’s loud, it’s chaotic, and it somehow makes the meatballs taste better.
Now, the "husmanskost" (Swedish comfort food) is legit. But the isterband? That’s a revelation. A traditional, slightly sour smoked sausage made with pork, barley, and potatoes. It arrives looking rustic and unassuming, then casually blows your mind 🤯. Who knew fermented sausage could be this good?
And then... the snappsgumma. No, not a singing lady with a tray (though we wouldn’t say no to that either). At Tranan, the snappsgumma is a tiny glass decanter 🧊🥃 nestled on a bed of crushed ice - just enough for one perfect shot of aquavit. Cold, sharp, and elegant. Like if a glacier got into the liquor business ❄️🍸.
So yes, it’s loud. Yes, your elbows will be close to your neighbor’s. But it’s also cozy, iconic, and proudly old-school in a way that feels rare and refreshing. Come for the isterband. Stay for the snappsgumma. Leave feeling like you’ve just had dinner in another century — and loved every minute...
Read moreA fantastic final meal in Stockholm with traditional Swedish dishes! My guest and I visited Tranan and tried a variety of dishes. Some standout dishes were:
Starters (all great for sharing): Matjes herring (WOW!!! the herring, with potatoes, sour cream, dill, brown butter, egg all in one bite, easily the best dish tonight) Toast Skagen with lavaret roe (roe had a very subtle flavor) Chanterelle toast (I am a huge mushroom fan so this dish was right up my alley)
Mains: Swedish pork sausage, served with potatoes (eh, frankly not impressed. Nothing really stood out here) Biff Rydberg (second favorite dish of the night!! Perfectly cooked steak in a tasty sauce/gravy served with horseradish and an egg yolk
Service: started really well until we got the check and the server got a bit aggressive about splitting the bill so that was quite a turn...
Read moreWas REALLY excited to try this place- I want to start out by saying we never got to taste the food (so for that a one star can’t be possible). We visited 2 days ago. Was sat by the waitress/hostess at a table that had trash on the seat. So in our minds we’re immediately thinking gross, this place doesn’t have it together. Next, we notice we only have one set up. Which is okay for a little while (but eventually we end up grabbing it from the table next to us) funny how this finally grabs the waitress’ attention. She comes over and grabs it out of our hands and then tells us “you wait”. So at this point it’s uncomfortable. We leave. THEN she runs after us through the restaurant with the trash that was at that table telling us that it’s ours. Shocked was an...
