Wow! I really never had situation in my life like We had yesterday there... 2 monts ago we was with my family there just for drink a coffee. Coffe was great, personal on the bar was great. So we said, next time we will come eat here. And yesterday / Sunday/ was this day when we was with family in Grindelwald again. We saw they have Day menu / carrot soup and Schnitzel/ That's perfect, because our daughter love Schnitzel. Was 11 50 a.m. so we walked in. First shock was, nobody care we was comming, So we was kindly sking personal / one lady, I don't know name, but she was from India I guess - that doesn't matter, this is just info for owners/ if is possible to eat here. She said calm and without smile or any welcome face said "YES". and she just go to show us a table. We asked for the juice and cola zero, and we was asking if it's real cola zero or any other type of cola. She said, "It's cola zero" She brought me water with cola sirup from Soda stream I guess because taste was defo not like original cola zero. And without telling to us Enjoy or anything like that. She just keeped that on table and she was walking out. We dont feel welcome there from the start. So I was Asked another personal if this is water with sirup.. He said " I will check that" ... He brought me new glass with water and cola sirup and more gas/ bubbles from soda stream I guess/ I tasted that and I said to me ..Oh Gosh, he make I joke. But ok ..I said Its ok / I don't wanna make comllains for water with sirup. And I saw how lightly smile if I said its ok because He though Im stupid 😃 ... So we ordered carrot soup and Schnitzel ... after 10 min they brought a soup. Soup was more sour like with carrot taste. Vinegar soup we can say .. After 35 minutes another person brough to us grilled chicken breast ...We said..But that is not Schnitzel. "Oh ok, we will check" After this time we saw how another table have the same.grilled chicken breast, and they said, its not soft. So I can't give to my 3 years old daughter a hard meat .. After 10 min came another person, with the same plate and said.."we cant change this" I said "But we was ordered schnitzel , and schnitzel is schnitzel not grilled chicken breast. He said "no, that is a schnitzel ... "
So I was just asking for bill of this water with cola sirup, juice and two vinger carrot soup.
That was first time in my life when I was walking outside from restaurant without eating something....And people on another tables looks also not happy with this food.
And something was true about this. Because The staff hide the board that was outside where was writing a daily menu - Schnitzel .. And that was at 12 30 pm ... and that is still a lunch time ... ;)
I working at hotel already 10 years and I know, our guests must feeling be welcome and happy. And we never lie to them. Sorry for that review but honestly, we was feel...
Read moreHoly crap, we have been in Europe for almost two weeks and that was the worst attitude we've ever received, and it was almost immediate, barely exchanged any words.
I give 2 stars because the young girl who helped us in was very nice, very friendly, we liked her.
Once we sat down, an older lady walked up to us and spoke a different language. Once we responded in English, her entire tone and demeanor changed. She immediately got very condescending, passive aggressive, and told us not to "picnic" and pointed to my water and bag of chocolate on the table.
She just WENT OFF rambling not to picnic, even though we had our menu open to order food from them and weren't eating anything of our own. I was going to order the veal with mushrooms, I was ready to give them all my money because I was hungry.
I had my water bottle with like 2 sips of water and a bag of chocolate we got "to go" at the store next door.
I understand you can't bring in food, that's a thing in the US as well, as we weren't eating anything outside the restaurant. And the encounter could have been friendlier as obviously we don't speak German and can't read all signs. We've also never had any one spoke to us like that before.
I very, very, rarely leave bad reviews. I am a very patient person, and I never walk out of places. But we walked out as we didn't want to give that lady our money, as we didn't feel it was deserved.
My sister sat there and watched how she spoke to me and her protective self wanted to smack her, as that is how rude she was.
I don't recommend if you're American to go here, you will be treated different. Worst human encounter so far, and that was rare.
Added a photo of what we brought in. I only have a purse and can't stuff my water in my purse lol. You can see my water bottle is pretty much empty and to-go bag of chocolate.
I'm sure the owner will respond to this and try to give some excuse or something, but promise me, that was not okay and totally ruined our potential dining experience as we were starving.
Update: I appreciate the genuine apology. After this experience, we learned that picnicing in Europe includes water bottles, as that we did not know. That was the first time someone has addressed that, as we have a different definition of picnicing which is usually just hot food. Hopefully the woman can learn to speak in a more respectful manner towards guests, as we would of had no problem learning this etiquette. Again, thank you for...
Read moreThe worst dining experience I’ve had in Switzerland for the week. I don’t usually write reviews, let alone bad reviews. But I sincerely recommend all to avoid this place. There are better places in Grindelwald to have a cheese fondue in peace… I know Barry’s tries to reply each Google review but I hope you guys do something about it beyond lip service.
Let’s start with the positive. Melody and Mariana were quite professional and sweet, along with two other waiters (we didn’t manage to get their names). Wasn’t super warm service, but they tried :) I appreciate that!
Regrettably, a man at the counter (looks like the manager, wasn’t wearing a name tag) was really rude, arrogant and perhaps even racist.
There was a couple before us who made a reservation under a non-English name. They were trying to clarify the name and he said rather loudly- no, I can read but next time you make the name under an English name like “James Bond”. He wasn’t joking, he was really expressing his displeasure. The couple apologised to him after that…
We also had a trying experience with him when my husband tried to ask for a small portion of cheese fondue without alcohol for me. The original cheese fondue had a very strong taste of alcohol, which I wasn’t able to take. The menu didn’t indicate so either. This same “manager” scowled, spoke really loudly (almost yelling) to my husband and said that we should have “asked earlier”, and whether our intent was to get a “new pot for free”. My husband said no, just a very small portion so that I would get to try the fondue. He relented but yelled “I will not do it for you next time.”
You can be sure there is no next time from us. I hope he doesn’t own this place.
I also observed a third interaction he had with an Asian couple, they seemed quite shaken from the experience but I did not hear the specifics to be able to comment on this…
He, together with Melody did bid us goodbye rather cheerfully…
Oh yeah there was also a housefly buzzing around us. Food was not great, pork chop was rock hard, portion was small. Nicely plated though..
Overall, will not recommend. You might be better off at the “tourist trap” Babbi restaurant 😂 at least they are polite, nothing snarky like what 3 different groups of customers received from Barry’s...
