I stayed here in April 2019. The hotel was lovely. The reception was quite small but the hotel itself is very cosy and the staff lovely and friendly. We were taken to our room after check in and being given the wifi code. We were initially shown to a ground floor room with a terrace and were quite disappointed as I had booked a balcony and the trip was a gift to my partner so the views of trees on the ground were not what I was expecting. We went back to the reception and asked if it was possible tocchange rooms. They accommodated us immediately and moved us to the room above on the second floor. They had also given us a fruit basket as we were celebrating. The views were incredible. The room was lovely and a great size with a cosy feel and wooden theme. The bed was extremely comfy as were the pillows! We had breakfast each morning which had everything from cereal to eggs, bacon, croissants, toast, jam, juice, fruit, yogurts, tea, coffee etc. The views were amazing from the restaurant too and it was never fully packed no matter what time we visited. I would definitely stay here again and it was kept so clean. The location was amazing, a few minutes walk from Grindelwald train station and in the centre of the town with restaurants, bars, shops, hotels etc either side. It is a few minutes walk from the cable cars up to First. The hotel has an amazing spa with steam rooms, an indoor jaccuzzi, a relaxation room with fresh water and fruits and an amazing rooftop infinity pool! The one and only negative point I would say about the hotel is that I picked it from all of the others in the village due to the rooms and view (which I was impressed with) and the fact it had a bar (which was also lovely - Espresso Bar) but also an Italian restaurant and a nightclub. As we left the village to fly home on 22nd April, the winter/skiing season finished on 23rd April I believe and so a few restaurants and bar etc were closing or were already closed. As a couple who have never visited a ski resort before or anywhere like this, I was not to know. The italian restaurant in the hotel was closed so you could not have lunch or dinner there and the nightclub was also closed which was a reason I chose this hotel. It was most disappointing that the website and also the website through which I booked our stay did not mention the nightclub or the restaurant being closed during our stay and I was only informed of the restaurant's closure during our stay when I emailed the hotel about it a few days before we arrived. This should be made clear on the website and when guests book but apart from this, I would definitely stay here again....
Read moreWe stayed at Hotel Spinne to celebrate my 30th birthday - I wish we had chosen another place. The "warm" welcome at the reception started with a "Please say you didn't come with a car!" statement, even though we indicated in our booking the need of a parking space. And that was just the beginning...
The room was utterly average, completely lacking quality and cleanliness. During our short, 3-night stay we experienced tons of problems: The twin beds kept sliding apart as soon as I tried to roll over to my partner for a cuddle. Far from ideal. And they were quite old, far from comfortable too so we didn't really get a good night sleep. The bed sheets had holes! I find it completely unacceptable, especially in a 4-star hotel. The bathrobes were also ancient and had holes. The bathroom was DIRTY. There was leftover dust from the mop in the corners, the shower head was full of limestone, a long-dead fly was discovered on top of the bathroom furniture along with serious amount of dust. The shower curtain was also ancient, stained and filthy. If that wouldn't be enough, the water pressure was also pretty low, yet the drain couldn't handle the small amount of water so I got to stand in ca. 10 cm of water during my shower. Yuck. The minibar had extremely poor selection (4 bottles of water and 2 bottles of beer). Totally not 4-star. The buffet breakfast was disappointing. It was officially available until 10am, but at 9.30 we could only eat the leftovers as half of the selection was already gone. One would expect the buffet (the 4-star buffet) to be re-filled properly during the full opening hours. The kitchen seemed to be lacking hygiene. During our last dinner I found HAIR in the middle of my main curse. If rules were followed, all kitchen staff would wear hats and this would never happen. This is unacceptable regardless the number of stars.
Literally during our whole stay I felt like "no way this is happening in a 4-star hotel". They could easily scratch 2 of those stars off based on the quality that is offered. Expectations were not met (not even close), this is not what I imagined for my birthday at all. I feel like I wasted a serious amount of money and my time and I wish I had never booked Hotel Spinne.
So dear travellers, learn from my mistake and do NOT book Hotel Spinne under any...
Read moreI stayed in a solo room with an Eiger view. The view was lovely. ||The room was ok, big enough but awkwardly laid out. The bed was like a US size twin, which was fine (but just in comparison, I went on to stay in a single room in my next city stop in Switzerland that was nearly big enough for two), and comfortable enough, but there were holes in the sheets and the single pillow was very bad, with no support to it at all.||The bathroom was ultra tiny, barely enough room to move in. With the door closed, you couldn't change clothes, and you had to kind of slide sideways around the sink to get into the shower. Worst of all, there's a sewage smell from the toilet, even with the toilet cover closed and the bathroom door closed. Faint, but there. This got progressively worse over my stay, as though it wasn't being cleaned well enough each day.||Housekeeping left a dirty tea mug and knocked my eye mask on the floor and left it there.||Breakfast was average, with ok scrambled eggs (likely made with cream though), and fairly fresh bread. Hot water was barely hot enough for a proper cup of tea. You could also get an omelet made to order but I preferred not to wait. Views of Eiger in the breakfast room are, of course, stunning.||Service was generally friendly although I was chastised once at breakfast for taking plates from the "wrong" place (though I'd had no instruction that would have ever let me know what the right place was before then).||The room was also quite hot and stuffy and could only be cooled by leaving the screen-less windows open; I basically left both of them open the entire time I was in the room, including for sleeping.||Overall it was okay for the money, not a super expensive hotel in a generally expensive location, and well located close enough to the train station, but I would probably look for another place to base next time in...
