I was very disappointed. The staff was very friendly and forthcoming. It's an ok noddle soup restaurant but don't expect japanese style ramen there.
Short: Just go to "Doki Doki".
Given the high rates and recommendations we went there with high hopes. It's often packed with long lines, so went extra early for dinner.
We had for starters: Pickled gurkins and mashroom bun, mains were: shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen and a vegetrian option.
Mashroom bun was good and had far-eastern taste. The kebab thousand-island-style mayo was a major distraction though.
Pickled gurkins: Just no, incorrectly cut, spiced incorrectly. just no.
The Ramens: one dimensional broth. The one dimension being salt. Meat was just wrong: It was supposed to be "roasted chashu". It just wasn't that. It was closer to steamed bacon. Egg: hmm not terrible but on the raw side but getting the consistency right is hard. The noodles: Industrial dried things. I can tell you in the asia store which ones.
Drinks: Don't get me started on the "house" IPA. no depth and prices just a joke. The beer presentation was also not even close to japanese.
It was overall ok, but just not "Japanese", neither in taste nor quality. I would have given it 4-5 stars for "noodle soup"
the name "honest ramen" implies already not cultural aligned owners.
Very good presentation and lots of hipster speak, but having tasted the real thing in Japan would have helped to create an actually japanese...
Read moreIt's 19:16 of Monday 27th of May 2024. It rains cats and dogs. There are more than a couple of empty tables: can't see the counter but I am sure there are a couple of spots available there, too. I get in the middle of the two doors (external/internal). The lady at the till sees me, we exchange a quick nod that I take like a "welcome in" and I approach the entrance. Wrong. Nicely but very firmly she tells me to wait "beyond the signal ("waiting here to be seated" placed between the street and the external door). Perfectly normal in a busy day. Not ok when outside is pouring water from every direction and I am already half soaked in rain. From the distance she tells me that someone will attend to me straight away. After five minutes nobody has come. The shop courtain does not shield me from rain. Well, you can do the best ramen in the world, but this is not customer service. Lest japanese-type of customer service. I used to eat decently here, but I promise, I'll never be back. A restaurant is not just about the food. The service plays a part. And an employee that can't see the situation and quickly act, means that who knows if then the dinner will be good. You need training my dear. I am going to spend my money somewhere...
Read moreI simply love this place. We have been there many times, we have tasted everything in the menu and it is our go-to if we want to have ramen. The fact that it does not allow réservations makes it even better because it allows us to be spontaneous, which is not the case with most restaurants in Switzerland.
I particularly like the chef's Tonkotsu ramen and the chicken bao but you cannot go wrong with one of the miso or shoyu ramen. The Tan Tan men is also a great option, as well as the gyozas. The personnel is very gentle and accommodating, providing you with the necessary paper towels to avoid getting broth everywhere on your clothes.
The only thing I have tried and I was a bit disappointed was the broth-less noodles. It was still quite tasty but it was missing the broth richness and it was a quite small portion for its price. I would suggest reducing the price on that one or increasing the noodle portion so that it is a bit more balanced option compared to the amazing other dishes.
All in all, an indispensable, must-go place for...
