The Raclette Factory is one of the tastiest and most memorable meals I have ever had in Europe. Yes, a simple cheese shop in Switzerland served me a plate that I find impossible to forget. If you are in Zurich, give this place a try.
The Raclette Factory is small with limited seating and has a chic, rustic-yet-modern Alpine decor. They serve cheese, cheese and more cheese, in all sorts of different varieties and options. Since this is a cheese house, it stinks inside -- but in the best way possible! I love, love, LOVE cheese and I find that the stinkier it is, the better!
The restaurant is hidden among the twisted cobblestone streets of Old Town. It's a restaurant that the locals call "self service." It works the in the same way as a quick service restaurant in America: go in, have a seat, check out the menu, and when you're ready, go up to the register to place your order. Pay and they'll deliver the food to your table when it's ready. We were a little confused when we walked in but soon figured it out. We took two seats at the bar so we could chat up the bartender (she wanted to practice her English so it was perfect).
Do not go here if you do not love cheese! That's what's on the menu: fresh, high quality, local cheese. I feel like Forrest Gump's shrimp loving friend Bubba when I start to think about all the cheeses on the menu: goat, sheep, blue, truffle, port wine, smoked, garlic, chili with a base of cubed bread, boiled potatoes, or mashed potatoes. The menu is rounded out with a couple of soups, a flatbread, a side salad, and a couple desserts. As with everything in Switzerland, food is expensive, but this was one of the best quality to value ratios we had during our entire trip in the country. A plate of 5.5 ounces of cheese runs about 15 Swiss Francs, or roughly $16 U.S. dollars ($13 Euros).
We both had a huge honkin' Swiss beer and our own plate of cheese. I had the traditional raclette with bread cubes and my hubby got a little wild and went with the garlic cheese with potatoes. Both were insanely delicious, but I am a cheese monster so how could I really hate a meal like this? Our meals came with the traditional accompaniments of pickled onions and a cute little gherkin (so good, like a little pickle treat). Silverware and napkins are in a stein on the table, and tipping is neither expected nor encouraged.
I love this restaurant and will absolutely return when I once again find myself in Zurich. I wouldn't say this is a straight up tourist restaurant, but they were all very friendly to us foreigners. Placing our order was easy even with the...
Read moreOverall great experience. Was welcomed and seated very quickly. Our server, Samira, was amazing. She was very friendly and served us well. She explained to us that a jug of water would be CHF 3 and then would be unlimited after that (beware of that). Our food came promptly and my wife and I were very happy with the food. The food tasted very good though serving size was a little less than what I was hoping for. I have a large appetite and so I was not filled with the food and could have easily had another plate if it were a little cheaper (though it is Switzerland so its to be expected that things are more expensive than other places). Another thing to note is that things moved quite fast. We were seated fast, food came fast and because it wasn't massive servings and we didn't want the food to go cold, we ate faster than normal. So if you want a chill slow dinner, from our experience, might not be the best place unless you sit inside and are more willing than we were to spend more money (we were on a tight budget).
Although the food portions were smaller than my liking, we really enjoy this place. Samira did a great job of serving us, very smiley, welcoming and patient with us, and the food tasted amazing. My wife is a particular lover of Raclette so this place was a great choice to stop by at and eat at. Overall really...
Read moreIt was a goal that we tried raclette cheese while in Zurich. This restaurant did not disappoint. If you want a good first time experience I recommend coming here.
It’s a small cozy restaurant with plenty of seating options. The waitress was very kind and she was attentive to us.
We ordered the raclette potato 🍽️ and added bacon to it. You gotta do it! It balances out the flavor and texture. Pickled and pickled onions was a nice touch when you want to clean your palette after each bite of raclette cheese.
Also ordered the Bargler Pizza 🍕 which is not Italian pizza. It’s an extremely paper thin pizza crust w/creme fraiche, raclette cheese, ham and onions on it. The ham were sliced thin and lengthwise and sprinkled on top. Once the pizza was done baking, the pizza was placed into a broiler to make the ham crispy on the top. This makes it all the difference.
Their house made tea was yummy and the Hurlman 🍺 lager was one of the best my husband ever drank. Zurich’s local beer...
