This was my first time in a fine-dining vegan restaurant — it was a nice experience overall.
The evening concept is simple: there is a surprise menu with four to eight courses. You can have a wine or juice pairing with your dinner. I wanted to try all the flavors, so I went for the full eight course surprise menu with an accompanying wine pairing.
We were told that the size of the dishes would be scaled according to how many we ordered. We saw that in action a during the evening when a nearby table ordered only four courses: their main course had three pieces of pastry filled with mushrooms — ours had only two. This was fine, though, since we couldn't have eaten more at that point. Like the food, the amount of wine is also scaled back. While you do get a different wine for each dish, you get less than a full glass of each.
The dishes were all beautifully arranged. There were some fun combinations such as pumpkin soup with pear sorbet. As one would expect, there were lots of colors and flavors and we generally enjoyed trying everything. The taste ranged from smoky (charred leek) to creamy (pumpkin soup) to somewhat hearty (packets of Savoy cabbage). Nothing was spicy or very intense, but it was all tasty in its own right.
The service was smiling and friendly. The chef served some of the plates himself, which was a nice touch. The whole thing took just over four hours, which means roughly 30 minutes between each course (but with some smaller "greetings from the kitchen" in between). We felt that was too long and the wooden chairs became increasingly uncomfortable after sitting on them for so many hours.
Tips for next time: order four courses instead of the full eight. This will speed things up and since the portions are a little bigger, I think we'll still leave the table...
Read moreOne of the most amazing Vegetarian (let alone Vegan) meals I've ever had. Did the "gourmet" (tasting) menu which consisted of an amuse bouche, three savory and one sweet dish. The amuse bouche I'm not exactly sure what it was... it involved some red quinoa and a semi-sweet sauce, along with possibly some diced root veggies.
Next followed the lambs lettuce salad with chestnuts, orange fillets and some sort of crustini. From there it was a celery soup poured over diced saffron apples. The combination of flavors was amazing and the soup was deliciously thick.
Following the soup was a pumpkin "quiche" which was thankfully on the smaller side but quite rich, creamy and enclosed in such a wonderful pastry. A sprig of oregano stood out of it and complimented the autumn dish.
The last savory dish was a house made spinach "root" ravioli. It was three giant ones - the pasta simply perfect and some microgreens to go along. There was optional white truffle which of course I had them put on. Happened in front of my eyes, done to taste, with a scale gauging how excessively you were going :)
The dessert, a chocolate cream with some (I think) poached fruit on top was fantastic. My only regret is that I was too full to put much of a dent in it!
I did the tasting with the wine pairings which worked out perfectly. Each perfectly tied to and complimenting the dish. Thanks very much to the two servers who took me through that meal -...
