Schumann’s BISTRO NO. 6 — Restaurant in Songshan District

I would give 0 stars if I could. If you have an allergy, stay away! We came here on Thursday and I showed my allergy card that states that I will be hospitalized if I am exposed to shellfish and cross contamination will set off anaphylaxis. The server said no problem. We ordered the pork knuckle dish, a side of veggies, and the veggie pancake. I have no idea which dish was the issue but after the meal, I started to wheeze, I thought it was strange and we started to leave but as we walked I realized my throat was closing up, we went back and I had to use my epi pen. We asked the server again and she said she told us the kitchen cleaned all the knives, pans, etc. We started to walk back to our hotel the Mandarin Oriental which is nearby and my throat started go close up again, I did not have my other epipen, my husband had to run to the hotel room as I headed to the hospital across the hotel. By the time I got to the hospital, I felt my throat close to completely and luckily my husband got there in time to inject me. At the hospital, they gave me shots of antihistamines, steroid, and vaporized epinephrine. Obviously there was shellfish cross contamination in the meal. The next day, I had s biphasic reaction (when you get a second anaphylaxis because the allergen is still in your system) and had to epipen again and get the same treatment at the hospital. We also had to cancel our flight and stay an extra day in Taipei due to me being extremely weak. I appreciate Schumann taking responsibility and covering my hospital bills and our flight change but it doesn’t make up the fact that I almost died and I am still not fully recovered. It’s almost a week and I’m still dealing with chest pains, my heart rain is jumping all over the place (60-160 resting) and I feel extremely fatigued. Having recently spent 2 weeks in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. I was intrigued by a German restaurant in Taipei. Not something I would usually try, but I wanted to compare if their food was authentic.

I ordered the pork knuckles for 700 NT (which I felt was very pricey but it's a specialty restaurant) and I asked the server if I could substitute (not order the side) of the mashed potatoes for fries. Well it may be a language barrier issue, she said it was no problem. (Usually that means it is fine and no charge.)

When I got the check I was surprised to see that they charged me the full price for a side of fries. Thinking this was probably a simple mistake when I went to pay I asked them about the extra charge and that I had substituted the mashed potatoes that normally came with it.

Unfortunately, their response was that the server was new and was not familiar with the menu. They did not offer a discount or to take it off.

To their credit they did ask if I would like to take the mashed potatoes to go.

Besides that issue, I think the food quality for the price is not very high.

I don't think I've ever had pork knuckle that has a crispy skin and unfortunately the sauerkraut did not have the normal flavor.

The other odd thing was that the Fry's did not come with mayonnaise. Which if you've ever been to Germany, you know is a must for any type of fries.

Maybe not so traditionally German, but some great options regardless 🤤 They have an extensive menu ranging from comfort food to healthier options. I would recommend for anyone visiting Schumann’s Bistro with a group of friends to call ahead of time to order their pork knuckle 🐷 perfectly crispy skin with juicy meat full of flavor. Another recommendation for sharing would be their Cheesy “pancake” as there are some interesting flavors to choose from 🍕 We got the Meatloaf Pancake and it was perfectly cheesy and meaty. If you are a fan of German Sausage, try out their sharing platter 🌭 Individual foods include All day Brunch, sandwiches, health bowls, risotto and pastas. 🍳🥓🥗🍝🍚 The Panini’s are also tasty and great value for money 🥪 Overall, the menu is priced fairly with good portion sizes 💵 Beers are good with a Buy 2 get 1 free promotion 🍻 Overall environment is cozy and welcoming with good service all around, will definitely be returning!
