Gulu's House 咕嚕好吃法式風味廚坊 — Restaurant in Taichung

Second time coming to Gulu’s House.

Everything is exclusive and prepare slowly (they even have a notification before you order your meal) The environment is really with a nice vintage decoration. I scored 4 stars, because the tables are to close to each other (it seems you are participating in other table’s conversation) and the environment is noisy (uncomfortable to talk).

FOOD: My friend and ordered two sets: STARTERS: Salmon Salad (Nothing Special) and Taiwanese Pate (my friend love it. I didn’t try it) SOUPS: Onion Soup (it’s really yummy and authentic - I always order it) and Mushroom Soup (my friend like it) MAIN COURSES: Duck (My friend like it and told me it was tender and juicy) and New Zeland fillet (It was tender, bleeding and the mushroom pepper matched perfectly). Both of them come with veggies. DESSERTS: Creme Brûlée (My friend like it) and I had 3 chocolate pie (I didn’t get the exactly name, but it was good. I could eat it again). It comes 2 pieces of bread per person and butter as appetizer.

MENU: It’s a simple menu with English and Chinese Version. You just pick a starter, soup, main course and dessert. You have around 3-4 options from each session and some options run out really fast. It’s a QR Code Menu. Just one observation that they could write the price of the options in the menu. It’s written after the meal option “NTD?” which is for me a little bit troublesome, since I don’t want keep asking all the time how much the meal is and I want to know how much I am paying extra for that appetizer.

SERVICE: They mention in the “Welcome Menu” that they have only 3 people working in the whole restaurant. So it’s a slow service. But they are all friendly and kind.

PRICE: 2,970 兩位 - If you pay with card, the price will be higher. So bring some...

Decided to visit this place after relocating to the new location. After being disappointed by so many Taiwanese chefs that studied French cuisine abroad and starting their own “French Restaurants and catering to Taiwanese people, and making their escargot “Taiwanese” style, finally found a restaurant that made it authentically French.

If you are a Taiwanese that’s NEVER had real French food, I wouldn’t suggest you come here because you’d complain about the “CP” value and comparing quantity with quality.

3 of us spent around $8000 NTD but that’s probably because we ordered 5 escargots, mixed plate, 2 beef tartare, 1 paté, 1 mixed charcuterie board, a plate of oysters and 1 apple pie. Couldn’t have enough of the escargot, but I do think the escargot was a bit too salty, the amount of salt used was a bit excessive; it was a bit overwhelming, otherwise the taste of parsley and snail was amazing!

If you love authentic French cuisine, I’d recommend this place.

Next time I come I might honestly order 3 bowls of escargot. 🤣

The price might be out of most people’s budget, but it’s French cuisine, the ingredients used are of high quality, especially considering they offer beef tartare.

On a side note: the service is a bit slow, but it didn’t really bother me as much since the environment was comfortable, I really enjoyed my food and the staff was friendly.

My dining partner and I wanted to have a nice dinner out to celebrate. I would have given 5 stars, but the behavior of regular customers seated near us ruined the evening for us. We ended up taking the rest of our food to go in order to leave quickly. The regular customers were extremely loud to the point where we couldn’t hear ourselves speaking. They were also drunk and bumped into our table every time they stood up, which was often. I understand this is not the fault of the staff, however, I don’t feel as though any consideration was given to the experience of the other customers if the regulars were behaving like this. The food does take a long time to come to the table which is understandable since it’s being prepared carefully. Regrettably, this also meant that we had to deal with the raucous customers for a long time. Our only hesitation in going back is that since they were regular customers, they may be there again and be allowed to have full reign over the restaurant floor. I have no complaint about the food, the service or anything like that. We loved the food and wish our experience was better since this is not something...
