Laojing Gokujo Yakiniku Meicun Branch — Restaurant in Taichung

Honestly, I’m surprised this place got a 4.9 with 16k reviews. This is a very average Yakiniku place.

The food: The meats were good, we got a set because ordering single dishes seem to be way overpriced going upwards of easily 400-600 NTD. Generally it was good but nothing too amazing. The biggest problem I had was I was kind of amazed that they actually just gave you 1 clam in one of the set items. 1 abalone I could understand, it’s an expensive piece, 1 clam was something I’ve never seen before out of all the restaurants I’ve been to, from cheap to expensive.

Service: There’s a service fee of 10% which is normal for these restaurants, I would say overall the service was fine.

Atmosphere: For a Yakiniku place that’s considered high end, this place was extremely noisy. If this was a cheaper all you can eat, I could understand.

Everything about the restaurant is 5 stars. It is luxurious bbq restaurant that serves great food at good value. The service we received from the entire crew is impeccable. Special thanks to 晨涵 and 惠珍 who went out of their way to help us bbq our meat. I guess they didn't want to see us ruin the A5 wagyu beef. Probably my best meal in Taiwan for this budget category. Just a word of caution, the Wagyu set isn't cheap, but it's really good. Service staff cook the Wagyu for you so you don't ruin it, and they tell you what condiments can elevate the taste. They are also attentive and refill your side dishes whenever they spot that you've finished it. Special shout-out to Nick who was so patient and attentive to our needs and let us enjoy our meal even though he wasn't able to have dinner yet. 10/10 recommend if you are okay with the price point.
