元手壽司-公益店 — Restaurant in Taichung

It's a nice Japanese style restaurant, nicely decorated, decent service although not exactly fine dining type. Some of the food , on the other hand, is of rather questionable quality. Nigiri sushi usually looks and tastes good but last night the rice didn't seem to be very fresh. I've tasted sushi all across the world, including very fine places in Tokyo, and coming from the west coast of Canada, Vancouver, I've had plenty of opportunities for indulging in very high quality product over the many years I lived in BC. There is a specific texture and even temperature that fresh sushi rice exhibits, and vice versa, when the rice is stale, or been sitting for too long being chilled, it poses certain characteristics, very unpleasant, clumpy yet hard. And you can't hide this stuff. You either have fresh rice or you are serving trash. The biggest disappointment was with the Philadelphia roll. Inside, I found a rather large piece of cheese. My wife took a bite of one of the rolls and immediately spat it out. I took the next roll apart and discovered that it's actually a few layers of processed American cheese shaped into a cube. I ate one of the pieces with the cheese to see what it tasted like, how disgusting indeed. 450NT dollars for that. I have been going to 元手 for the past 10 years, enjoying it most of the time. Japanese Restaurant - While they offer a good range of sushi, sashimi and nigiri, the sushi can vary between "great" and "horrible", so it's hard to know what to expect. The seafood is fresh, but their "creative" rolls leave a lot to be desired in terms of taste.

Food is okay. Price is acceptable and bowls are large. Pretty slow service due to crowdedness but can do better. We waited 20 minutes for a frozen dessert. They were a bit understaffed, tables were available but not enough staff for cleaning. Method of ordering can also be improved, paper recommended.
