TL:DR, great presentation/ambiance, don't expect amazing food. Maybe come for happy hour (which they seem unwilling to provide the menu on Facebook) And don't expect them to actually understand your English, they will pretend to understand but apparently don't actually understand which is the worst. Just be clear you don't understand!
Definitely an experience. Called to make reservations day of. Told only "high top" seating was available, I asked if "high top" meant bar seating and if there was anything else, I got a response of "yes bar" and "ok" and then they hung up. What?! Called back saying I'll make the reservation. Seconds later I get a text saying the reservation is for 2 days later. Called back again to reconfirm, then they fixed it.
Arrived at restaurant and instead of being seated at the bar, was seated at the dining room which was nice.
Overall though food was mediocre at best compared to other Indian establishments in Taiwan. Considering the price (presentation and ambiance were great), I'd expect the food to be above average.
Start off with the standard "cracker" appetizer, was not warm and actually rather stale and no sauces were provided. This is what I'd have expected and have received from food court Indian food in Taiwan. Not a great sign to start a meal off with.
I asked the waitress which drink she'd rather prefer between 2. One fruity and the other a whisky based. I asked if the fruity one was very sweet and she said yes and so I told her I'll take the Whisky based one. Overall the drink wasn't bad, but it was very sweet as well, nor did the notes represent any of the descriptions that was provided. (Definitely need better descriptions of the food, though I've realized this with all Indian restaurants in Taiwan)
And this is rather long already. I'll finish this review one day when I have more time or if people...
Read moreDuring my two-week trip to Taipei, I found myself visiting Saffron 46 almost daily for lunch, and it quickly became a place I looked forward to. Nestled around Taipei 101, it’s a little gem serving up authentic Indian cuisine, and the experience was something I couldn’t get enough of.
The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming vibe, with a spacious interior and great views of the city. The service was excellent – the staff were always friendly and attentive, which made each visit feel relaxed and enjoyable.
Now, the food – that’s where the real highlight was. I couldn’t get enough of their mutton dishes, especially the Rogan Josh. The meat was so tender and flavorful, cooked just right with all those amazing spices. The jumbo prawns and bay prawn dishes were also excellent – fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. If you’re in the mood for variety, their thali set is perfect for lunch. It lets you try a little bit of everything, which was great when I was in the mood for a hearty meal.
For dessert, I had to try their gulab jamon with ice cream, and it didn’t disappoint. Sweet, warm, and the ice cream added a nice touch to balance the richness. It was a perfect end to my meals.
However, if you’re planning to try some of the smaller snacks, I’d say steer clear of the pani poori and aloo tiki chat – they weren’t as great as the main dishes. And for anyone who loves some heat, the mutton vindaloo definitely packs a punch with its spiciness.
One tip I’d give is to book a seat ahead of time, especially during rush hours. It can get pretty busy, and booking via Google or giving them a quick call ensures you don’t miss out.
All in all, Saffron 46 was a standout for me during my time in Taipei. The food was delicious, the service was great, and it was the perfect spot to enjoy a comforting meal after a busy day...
