My cousin and I visited Saheel BBQ with high hopes, based on a local's recommendation for delicious barbecue. Unfortunately, our experience quickly soured, and what followed was a series of events that went far beyond a simple bad meal.
The service was a glaring issue from the start. We were left without cutlery or even glasses for our water, forcing us to awkwardly gesture for help. While the malai boti was genuinely delicious and tender—the one saving grace of the meal—the rest was a complete disappointment. The butter chicken tasted bizarrely like it was made with sriracha, a complete miss.
When we complained, the owner offered to replace the dish with three shawarmas, calling it a "favor." Not only were these terrible, but he charged us extra for them.
The real nightmare began the next day. The owner saw us on the street, grabbed me, and surrounded us with about 20 of his workers. He proceeded to deal with the situation in an incredibly immature and threatening manner. He threatened to burn us alive, have us deported, and even kill us. He also claimed to know the High Commissioner to get us in trouble.
His sons eventually came out and tried to de-escalate, though they also made threats. They forcefully took us into their office, where he interrogated us, asked for our IDs, and pried for personal information like our accommodation, internship location, and phone numbers. He then completely changed his demeanor, claiming, "You are like my son" in a transparent attempt to disarm us. In a final act of manipulation, he bribed us with three shawarmas and forcefully made us delete our initial review to silence our complaints.
We were in a state of shock for 2 days after the terrifying experience. We did not pursue legal action because we were leaving the country within the week and our priority was simply to get home safely.
This review is not about the food; it's a warning about the hostile and dangerous environment we experienced. The owner's behavior is a serious threat to personal safety. I do not recommend that anyone eat there, not because of the food, but because of the owner's terrifying and...
Read moreThis is the go-to place for an amazing bbq experience while in Arusha. The service is fast, the food is always served piping hot, and the taste is delicious. Try the mishkaki and nundu with a side of masala chips. Different flavors of barbecued chicken and shawarma are also available, along with seasonal juice or the everyday favorite, sugar cane drink. We had a large group of 30+ hungry diners, and the owners made all their efforts to accommodate and serve us in the best possible manner. I highly recommend this place for...
