Great extensive menu for Lanna food. We had a late lunch and there was no queue at 15:30. We left at 17:00 and were surprised to see it would have been possible to get a table straight away at that time. The open air venue was pretty. When the restaurant is not busy choose your table carefully as not all of them are well served by fans.
We had nam prik naam puu, mashed eggplant salad, herb steamed chicken, charcoal grilled pork neck, and sweet vegetable soup with dried fish along with sticky rice. For me the pork neck with a delicious tamarind and chilli dipping sauce was our star order. I liked the nam prik a lot too. Foreigners should be advised that this is made with fermented crab paste, and not fresh crab. The given name on the menu of “crab chilli dip” might be misleading. In a similar vein I would not call funky nam prik kapi made with fermented shimp paste a shrimp dip.
My companion’s favourites were the mild aubergine salad made with roasted aromats served with soft boiled egg and the savoury bone in steamed chicken in a rich flavourful broth. The sweet vegetable soup was actually so spicy we couldn’t eat much of it. It did have a slightly Japanese flavour (if you discounted the chilli heat) as the dried fish stock was reminiscent of a strong bonito dashi.
Prices were reasonable especially given the food quality. Our copious lunch including two large Changs and fresh coconut juice (to counteract the heat of the sweet vegetable soup) came...
Read moreI made a special trip out from the Old City to try this establishment. Disappointment. Maybe I am not a fan of the Lanna style. I ordered three of their specialties and four in total, and they were ALL spicy and fish sauce forward and unbalanced.
I specifically asked the waitress several times and typed it onto google translate, "not too spicy." All of my four dishes were spicy. Even the vegetable dish, which she said was NOT spicy. I generally can handle spice but not in every single dish.
If you must eat here, skip the vegetables with the dip. Boring and one-note, spicy. I ordered the crab dip and not a crab flavor to be found. I didn't try the grill meats because it sounded ordinary, but everyone else seemed to be ordering it. Banana wrapped option- fish, pork, etc. had a nice lemongrass essence but again SPICY! Popular spot and expect to wait with slow service. Good thing I had an hour and half because I needed every second of it before my next appointment.
The robotic voice recording calling out your number for a table ruined any ambiance. As I write this in the evening my stomache still feels heartburn from the heat. I only managed to eat half of my dishes and ignored the...
