Wikunpanich Steamed Bun — Restaurant in Chiang Mai Province

Not to disrespect or anything. But the bun here is not as good as all bloggers review. (I started to distrust them)

With people having high standard with croissant in the whole chiangmai, Chinese bun seem left out and no standard being developed. You can't just keep saying "original recipe" when u finally found out what the real food should taste like.

The dough is too hard, the texture is too dense. No soft landing of ur teeth to the dough surface. The filling, well, different people have different taste. I don't really wanna touch that area. To me, egg custard is too dry. Pork with egg is too strong a taste. Black bean is too rough. Would be nice to have smooth texture in your mouth, rather than feeling some...

📍 They sell large steamed buns (salapao), zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), and shumai. This is an old-school, long-standing local favorite that’s been part of the neighborhood for years. 🏮 My grandma loves it — I always stop by to buy some for her whenever I’m in the area ❤️

🥟 The salapao (steamed bun) is made with a naturally fermented dough, giving it a slightly cloudy color and unique aroma. The texture is slightly chewy, with a roughly minced pork filling that’s dense and flavorful — not too salty, just right.

Great variety of Chinese products, which I am sure passed down from this Chinese-Thai family.

Was excited to try their pork bun (Char-Siew, for those who are familiar with the Cantonese-style originals that you get from Dim Sum). Unfortunately, their bun texture was on the hard dough side, which is very different from the delicate texture which is common with the best versions that can be found from the original authentic Cantonese style. The meat filling is quite good with salted egg as well. But the bun is vulgar, lacking in finesse.

I didn’t try the rice dumpling, and other products. I think they might be decent. But the bun is unforgivable for those looking for an authentic char-siew...
