A Night in the Clouds at Penthouse Bar + Grill, Park Hyatt Bangkok
When it comes to high-altitude indulgence in Bangkok, few places strike the chord quite like Penthouse Bar + Grill. Perched at the top of Park Hyatt Bangkok, this multi-level haven combines bold mixology, moody jazz, and a sky-high steakhouse experience — all wrapped in a concept that riffs off musical eras and Manhattan cool.
We had originally planned to kick things off at the famed rooftop bar on level 36 — a sleek open-air playground overlooking the Bangkok skyline — but the weather had other plans. So instead, we eased into the evening at the main Penthouse Bar indoors. Moody lighting, plush seating, a mellow pre-dinner crowd, and a soundtrack of soft jazz set the tone.
Though the rain kept us from the full rooftop experience, the cocktails still took us there.
The Tamarindo Picante — a smoky, spicy, and slightly tangy masterpiece — layered mezcal with chili and tamarind in a way that danced on the palate. A vibrant tribute to both Mexico and Thailand, it had just the right hit of heat to awaken the appetite.
The Sunset arrived next, visually stunning with its ombré gradient and effervescent finish. Think Aperol spritz meets cucumber G&T — but elevated with peach, yuzu, and a whisper of herbal bitterness. Light, floral, refreshing. The kind of cocktail that makes you forget the rain entirely.
We then made our way upstairs for dinner at the rooftop Grill — and what a dinner it was. A bottle of 2020 D.V. Catena Tinto Historico 1910 set the mood: dark berries, a bit of spice, beautifully full-bodied, perfect with the fire-kissed meat to come.
We started with the Hokkaido Scallops, served in a velvety seafood velouté, delicate and rich at once. The A5 Wagyu Tartare was a standout — bold, umami-packed, with marrow emulsion and a cured yolk that added luxurious depth. Even the humble Caesar Salad was flawless, brimming with umami thanks to anchovy dressing and crisp bacon shards.
Then came the showstopper: the Beef Tasting Experience, a carnivorous symphony featuring four different cuts — Oguma Striploin, Blackmarket Ribeye, WX Tenderloin, and a glorious grilled Thai-Charolais Bone Marrow. Each cut brought its own character, texture, and flavor — from the fatty melt of the Wagyu to the clean bite of the tenderloin. Paired with housemade sauces (the Béarnaise and Nahm Jim Jeaw deserve a special shoutout), it was an experience that married Japanese precision with global steakhouse bravado.
For something heartier, the Klong Phai Chicken with truffled mash and chicken jus offered a comforting yet elevated alternative — juicy, golden-skinned, and quietly elegant.
Desserts didn’t skip a beat. The New York Cheesecake was classic and creamy, served with tart berry compote and strawberry sorbet. The Lemon Tart was zesty and crisp — a refreshing finish after the richness of the meal.
Just when we thought the night couldn’t get any better, we looped back to the rooftop for live jazz and round two of cocktails — this time from their musically inspired signature collection.
The Negus Concert was a walnut-tinged, frothy mix of Kraken Rum, Frangelico, egg white, and lemon — a historical nod to Baroque-era concoctions but with modern finesse. Smooth, aromatic, and completely unique.
And then came Love Buzz — an emotionally complex drink blending tequila, rum, mezcal, and apricot with bee pollen cordial and black tea. Citrusy, smoky, subtly sweet. A romantic finish in every sense.
What makes Penthouse Bar + Grill so special isn’t just the view (though it is jaw-dropping), or the food (which is world-class), or even the drinks (which are creative and flawlessly executed). It’s the narrative. The layers. The seamless transitions between vibe, taste, and sound. You don’t just come here for a meal — you come for a curated, high-altitude journey through flavor and time.
And next time, I’ll be back when the rooftop’s open. Because if the experience indoors was already this cinematic, I can only imagine what it's like with the...
Read moreNever ever expected to be discrimination in my OWN country. My family and I went to this place to celebrate our special day but it was ruined by the service of the Penthouse Grill.
We ordered Beef Tasting Experience along with other dishes. It took them more than AN HOUR to be ready. Not sure if it was their usual preparation time or was it because there was/were (a) VIP table(s) that day. 🤷🏻♀️ I’d say poor management either way.
They forgot to serve us with the sourdough. I literally LAUGHED.🤣 I couldn’t believe they have provided the butter knife but not the bread and the butter to use it for. 🤷🏻♀️ I had to ask for it myself if the serving sequence was a bit different than I used to. Their response was “Oh- you haven’t got them yet?. Then, the sourdough just ✨magically ✨appeared on the table when we almost finished dining.
We ordered a bottle of wine, and after opening and serving for the first round, NO ONE paid any attention to our table. My family tried to notify them by raising our hands and calling them, but they were busy standing around and attending to other tables. This happened multiple times and after a long wait, finally someone realized like “Oh, It’s actually my job.” when my family member had to got up and pour wine himself. I asked if this was a self-service restaurant in case I misunderstood. They said no and please let them take care of our table. (We kinda got an attention when other tables began leaving.)
Yes. I did bring this up to the staff and a manager that day. They apologized, waived the wine charge, and offered free drinks on the rooftop bar, but we no longer wanted to be there. The explanation/excuses we were given— I would not say it was the best response we could get from this type of restaurant. I sincerely hope they improve their service because no one should ever be treated the way my family was treated especially on our special day.
My suggestion if you’re a Thai person, make sure to bring at least one foreign friend to get a standard minimum service from this place. That was what I grasped from sitting there for 2 hours, watching everyone got a standard service while our table was ignored. We ended up taking the cake home and blowing candles in peace. If your party is all Thai, I wouldn’t recommend going to this place as it might ruin your day.
Lastly, the leather sofa was...
Read moreMy experience at the Penthouse Bar+Grill was nothing short of a disgrace, and frankly, it left me furious. From the moment I stepped into the lobby, there was an obvious lack of warmth, professionalism, and basic courtesy. For a restaurant located in the Grand Hyatt—a globally recognized luxury brand—this level of service is unacceptable and shocking. One expects far better, especially when compared to other high-end establishments.
Let me be clear: the service was appalling. The restaurant manager blatantly ignored my table, choosing to exchange pleasantries with other diners while we were treated as if we didn’t exist. The staff’s disinterest was equally astonishing—they couldn’t be bothered to ask how our food was, pour water, or perform even the most basic aspects of their job. Instead, I had to constantly flag them down, only to be met with indifference, leaving me to do things myself. This isn’t luxury service; this is incompetence.
🚩Cons: The steak was a disaster. Poor quality, poorly cooked, tasteless, kids portion, and utterly unpalatable. The knives provided were dull, dirty, and frankly, embarrassing for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. I had to demand a clean one, which shouldn’t even have been necessary. The food and drinks were absurdly overpriced given their lackluster quality. Charging luxury prices for below-average, sometimes outright horrible dishes, is an insult to the diners who trusted this establishment to deliver excellence.
📌Pros: The only thing is the location of the hotel. Beyond that, there is absolutely no reason to waste your time or money here.
I will NEVER return, and I strongly urge anyone considering dining here to save themselves the frustration and...
