I happened to find Foojohn Jazz Club when a place close by that I was planning to try was packed out. Fortunately for me I could hear the first act warming up (blues guitar) warming up so I went in search of it.
The club isn't all that obvious since the door is a few metres down a small side street and is not very well lit, though maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough.
The club is really quite small. I'd guess there is seating for 50 or 60 people including about six at the bar. I was there early(ish) so it was quite empty but by the time the opening act was done it was almost full and given it was a Saturday night you kinda expect it will be. The place has a happy vibe and everyone appreciated the music, with good reason too as both the solo blues guitarist and the follow up four piece band were pretty good. I'm not sure someone looking for 'real' jazz would be satisfied but for me the performances were great on a Saturday night in a quiet corner of Bangkok.
And what is a Jazz Club without cocktails? (A pub, but that's beside the point 😉). The cocktails at Foojohn were really good. I tried a couple and because I was seated at the bar I got to watch the barman at work so I can attest to the fact that the range is impressive and I didn't see any complaints. (As a bit of a Negroni snob these days my only suggestion would be for Foojohn to invest in a better red vermouth - but I'm not complaining, I had two and they were definitely up to scratch).
So yeah, if you're looking for a bit of jazz while you're in Bangkok Foojohn is worth a look. Don't be surprised if you stay until...
Read moreMy brother and I just happened to walk down the little soi this bar was located. It was the first bar we encountered, and later, we became quite delighted at the quality of this place. The first floor is a retro-arcade, which we only saw in passing. Reminds me of arcades I knew in the 80s. They told us that the second floor had jazz music. Intrigued, we headed upstairs into an atmospheric throwback of a jazz club that could be in Chicago. They had a nice selection of cocktails and beers (mostly cocktails). They are delicious. This was a Wednesday night but soon a jazz duo started playing a set beautifully! We were both quite impressed and delighted by the happenstance of being in this place, which we had no plans on visiting. Definitely, God exists! And, he looked upon us with favor. The duo certainly looked like they enjoyed themselves. And, certainly, it was not for the number of people there on that night either. I estimate that there were only about 8-9 people there that fateful night. It was definitely a night blessed with a pleasant memory with my brother in a quiet part of Bangkok, which we absolutely did not expect. Those musicians were quite something! Thank you, God. We...
Read moreVisited for a friend's birthday as part of Restaurant week. Was a big group but we had booked 1 month in advance and were having a 4 course set menu. Arrived at 7.30; some people received their starters by 9pm, others were still waiting when some people were receiving their main. Several people never received one of their courses. The food was frequently cold, and even when warm, was no better than mediocre.
The cocktails are very good and made with loving care but there was only one barman and he was totally overwhelmed. One person in our group waited nearly an hour for a cocktail and only received it after asking for it 3 times.
There seemed to be enough wait staff but most were stood around with little to do. The only time the service was prompt was when we were asked to pay for a drink - this always happened with no delay!
Could be good place but does not seem to be set up for groups....
