I came here on a hot spring afternoon following up a big lunch at an Indonesian restaurant. I didn’t think I would have room for dessert. My comrade ordered normal peynirli künefe with kaymak and a çay. At this place they make it fresh with the flame between two metal plates…so we didn’t mind the longish wait…the nice man serving us brought out carrots, nuts, orange slices and a small and cute jug of milk with some shot glasses 😁. I haven’t had milk in a long time and I was wishing for it. God himself answered my prayer for milk and delivered unto me this small jug. It was wonderful. Like heaven in a small jug. I love milk so much. Here in Istanbul it has a sweet endnote. Fabulous. I was so happy after this milk surprise that I totally forgot about the künefe. My friend here is a self proclaimed “künefe expert” when he walks down the street people call him the künefe kingpin, so you can imagine how the server was shaking with fright carrying the künefe to such an esteemed man. It looked nice and the kaymak that lay atop it was a nice white and about a half inch thick. Lovely green pistachio crumble graced the top of the golden pastry. Notes from The Künefe Kingpin: -Could be crunchier -More or stronger cheese -“the guy was nice he gave me a nice smile”
I too tried the künefe and was pleased and satisfied. Overall 10/10 experience. The street is beautiful and great for people watching. I saw the biggest motorcycle I’ve ever laid eyes on. It could’ve held 5 big men easily. The milk and stuff was free. To top it all off I doubt that there’s a single coconut in the whole building. A...
Read moreNice little kunefe place, quiet street just off of the chaos that is Taksim square at night. Kunefe (sweet middle-east dessert) is cooked fresh, to order. And it tastes remarkably good. Not too syrupy, nice crunchy top texture, not too sweet, cream was excellent taste, nuts great florish. Well done. Served with carrot (strange?), clementine, milk and nuts. As usual. Price is 300TL for 2 person serving. Size is perfect, price is ok too. Kunefe is not something you do every night.
Service was fast, business like, but not so friendly. It was late in the afternoon. Atmosphere is city: garbage trucks, taxis, all kinds of wheeled vehicles going by a tiny stone street. Tables on sidewalk are very comfortable, chairs plastic but comfy too. Noise, pollution of a tight street (literally, garbage truck went by and breathing was tricky for a few minutes). Inside is calm and quiet. Plenty of seating inside. WC upstairs in excellent shape, no issues. If you have a big party, I...
Read moreRemember “Anton Ego” in the animated movie "Ratatouille"? There was a moment when he cried as he ate something so delicious...part of it was that it also reminded him of his good childhood memories.....Well, I nearly cried trying Künefe for the first time in my life here at Keyfeder Künefe Katmer.
OMG. And.....my wife and I have decided to go back soon to try other Künefe varieties. They made it fresh, right then and there...WOW, what a delight.
The place seems very traditional as far as we know. I wouldn't call it fancy, but that is not a bad thing. On the contrary, I doubt a fancy place would have this taste. We ate on one of the outside tables besides the street.
I also got the feeling this is all they do, and they do it well!
Bon appetit,
