I'm not really one for writing restaurant reviews usually but my positive experience yesterday at Dos Amigos compelled me to do so. There has been an explosion of hispanic food outlets in Aberdeen in recent years, most of them offering bland tex-mex that really doesn't hit the spot for someone who used to live in Texas.
This place is different. From the moment the complimentary aioli touched my tongue, I could tell this was not another Chipotle-lite burrito bar and isn't going to garnish your taco with pickled jalapeno slices from a jar with more style than substance, this is a restaurant that truly cares about the flavours it is putting out onto your plate, they ain't messing around.
Despite my craving for authentic Mexican food, it was more the Spanish side of the menu that I was attracted to. The Chimichurri Steak was off the charts and ridiculous value for money at not much more than what you'd pay for a large meal at Burger King these days. My wife was apprehensive about going for the Paella after disastrous experiences at other restaurants in the city (Cuban in particular) but she was more than satisfied, making mmm-mmm noises all the way through that made me a little jealous. A side of Patatas Bravas with more of that wonderfully garlicky aioli topped off a fantastic meal.
Despite only planning to have a light lunch, we both agreed we couldn't stop there, so we found room for a couple of desserts - Churros and Creme Catalan. Both were immaculate and perfectly executed.
I honestly can't think of any other restaurant in Aberdeen that serves food that truly tastes "home cooked" and provides such excellent value for money. Please go, help it become successful so it stays...
Read moreI’m actually gutted to be writing a negative review, as I really don’t enjoy doing them. But Dos Amigos just didn’t live up to the hype.
It’s tucked away down a bit of a sketchy looking road, even though it’s just off one of the main streets in town. From the outside, the building does look the part, like a charming little Spanish restaurant, which I appreciated. But once inside, the stairs going up to the toilets (and the toilets themselves) were pretty rough and really need some attention.
The main restaurant area sticks to the Spanish theme, but it just felt dated. Like it maybe had a nice vibe once, but could do with a refresh.
I’d heard loads of good things about the food, which is what brought me here. But honestly, only a couple of the dishes really stood out. The steak burrito in particular was a let down, overcooked and so piping hot it felt like it had been through a microwave (Chef Mike might’ve had a hand in that one).
Flavour wise, it wasn’t awful, there were some nice bits, but overall, it just didn’t hit the way I was expecting. We were in and out in about 30 minutes, which says a lot considering how much food we ordered. If that doesn’t scream microwave, I don’t...
Read moreWe went on Restaurant week Firstly the
pain con Queso bread with cheese with a part baked roll with cheese on it.
The prawn with Chorizo with exceptionally salty way too much. The chicken strips were nice but possibly out of a faitita dish without the wrap.
The wrinkly potato were exceptionally salty and the red sauce was definitely not mojo red sauce it was a curry sauce.
The Gambas Al ajillo should be sizzling it was cold the prawns were not cooked in the hot oil they had already been cooked and placed in cold very very disappointed with that dish.
The last dish was chicken with honey and garlic absolutely no garlic in there. My husband had Carajillo coffee which was most definitely a Irish coffee not the one he asked for ?
Overall not a good experience we might call out of the restaurant week then perhaps the staff would be more attentive. The food better prehaps. I asked about the chef yesterday he's Spanish oh I don't think he is? No Spanish person would have sent...
