Dining for two on a Thursday evening. Appetisers- We started of with a breaded prawn mini bite. The prawns were succulent yet crisp. They were however slightly on the small side and there were only four. The came with a large (quite excessive) quantity of a sweet mayo like sauce and a grilled lemon piece - much appreciated. This was followed by the bread basket (4 items) of which the best was a wholemeal seeded roll. Drinks- The person I was dining with chose a glass of chardonnay while I chose a glass of mango juice and we shared a bottle of sparkling water. The mango juice was nice and had plenty of ice. Main- We both chose the chicken skewer, the skewer itself was of good size and had chunks of chicken with pepper slices in between. Absolutely delicious. It was accompanied with a large portion of chips (perhaps a little excessive). These chips were perfectly crisp though sometimes a little stubby. Also included was a salad with a dressing on top - all very nice though perhaps a little more salad would be appreciated. Dessert- I chose to have the creme brulee. All expectations were exceeded. It came in a pan and consisted of a decadent and sweet custard topped with a thing crust of caramelised sugar. Atop this sat some strawberries and short bread. My friend had the mango Charlotte. It was more of a sponge cake topped with a cream layer and then mango sauce. Raspberry and meringue pieces served as a garnish round the plate. It was enjoyed. Service- The service was this establishment's shining star. The waiters were smartly dressed, polite and gentile. No fault could be found. Conclusion- The square grill brasserie is a fine establishment with great food and lovely staff. Keep in wind though it is a little pricey. 5/5...
Read moreWas able to walk in and request a table for two without any booking or issues, though booking seems like a safe way to go! It was quite a popular place, and after the experience, it's no wonder why!
The staff are attentative, friendly, professional, and well presented. We were promptly taken to a table and provided menus. While looking through, we were asked if we wanted any water to get us started.
The order was taken in good time, and drinks came swiftly. The starters (cripsy butterfly prawns with a chilli mayo) arrived in around 10 minutes and looked absolutely amazing. Smelled great, and you can tell they were breaded and cooked to order. The chilli mayo is not hot, so those who are worried about the heat will actually enjoy this mild flavour.
The mains (slow cooked beef tortellini and fish & chips) arrived in good time after the starters and was absolutely devine. The tortellini were cooked perfectly, and the slow cooked beef was just an absolute joy to bite into. The creamy cheese sauce that accompanied was rich and silky smooth and was a wonderful compliment to the tortellini and beef.
The fish was quite sizeable and had mushy pea, a slightly grilled lemon slice, as well as capers mayo to accompany the chips. The chips (of which I can personally attest to) were cooked perfectly, with skin left on. Crispy on the outside, smooth on the inside, and a slight touch of salt seasoning. The fish batter was crispy and light, with a perfectly cooked piece of cod.
All in all, it was a lovely meal and a great environment, with the gentle sounds of piano being played throughout. We were able to enjoy things at our own pace, and the staff made sure everything was perfected.
Would highly recommend. 10/10 will be...
Read moreWe had dinner here the night before our wedding with our wedding party (it was a small wedding with 17 of us in total). We booked Thursday night for the following Saturday and I wasn’t hopeful they would be able to accommodate us due to the large party size. They got back to us immediately confirming our reservation.
We all ordered starters, mains and desserts. Some of us ordered from the set menu and some of us ordered from the standard al a carte. The service was impeccable, especially as our larger party size meant it was slightly chaotic when ordering and remembering who had ordered what. The food was absolutely incredible. Not one single complaint from our party - everybody enjoyed what they had. Some of us ordered steak which was cooked exactly as we had asked for. We also ordered some pasta dishes which were very flavoursome. We had 4 children with us and the children’s meals were incredible generous portion sizes (as were the adult meals) and cooked with the same attentiveness and care as the adults.
We sat outside and there was live music inside which we were able to hear and enjoy. The weather was incredible and alongside the ambiance of the restaurant and the setting just outside of the Abbey it felt like we were on holiday.
This is such a stunning restaurant, well placed in the centre of Bath with incredible food and staff. I would highly recommend. We loved it so much we went back for a roast dinner (without booking but they kindly accommodated us with enthusiasm) on the Sunday which was of the same standards. It was incredible food experience and I cannot wait...
