Family visit to Bath. After looking at the website and seeing the reviews for "The West gate" were pretty good we decided to book Sunday dinner for 1pm as it was close by the Roman baths where we were visiting. We arrived 10 mins before our booked time met a nice young girl complete with radio on the door. We asked if things were running smoothly and whether there would be a wait for food as we had only an hour in which it eat before heading off to see next site. The girl messaged kitchen and was told no delay but for us to order straight away. We were shown to our table and given menus, we asked where the days specials board was as it said on the paper menu but we were passed to a man also with radio called Tim. He said they had been busy and that if we wanted roast there was only one beef one lamb and as much chicken as we wanted. All good... We ordered drinks for 5 (larger, larger shandy, cider and 2x J20s ) one lamb, 2 scampi, one roast chicken and a burger and chips. The drinks arrived, with a lager of but no shandy. The waiter who had taken the drinks order passed our table and we told him that we were missing a shandy. He said come to the bar and pay for one as he had not taken payment for it. I said I'm sure he did, he pulled my receipt out of the bin and checked. Sure enough I had paid, he apologized and gave me my drink. We sat chatting and waiting. The restaurant was not busy, after some time 40mins to be exact we were getting restless. The door girl passed by so we asked where our food was, she got hold of Tim out of sight but within ear shot. He asked kitchen where our food was, he came and apologized and said the food was in its way. We reminded him we were on a dead line and that we weren't happy, he then fetched our food. The food was luke warm , it had obviously been at somewhere for some time, hungry and in a rush we ate it be when Tim came back to check all was ok we said no the food was cold. He apologized and said he would get us some complimentary chips, we continued with the meal most unhappy waiting for the chips. A further 10 mins passed and Tim passed again telling us he was just going to get chips. We waited, past our dead line to leave, no chips arrived so we got up and left. As we passed the girl on the door we told her we were most dissatisfied. As we got out side Tim rushed out. Apologized again saying the kitchen was on the upper floor and our food had sat in the lift. He asked what he could do, if I had had time I would have asked for my money back. But as we had to leave as next visit was booked. I took nothing from him. So I am afraid I will not recommend this establishment. Staff were pleasant but incompetent. Service was terrible and the food not worthy of the price. Tim did try to apologise and asked what he could do to compensate us. But to be honest it was such a basic order, we had pre- booked and the bar did not appear to be busy we don't understand how we had to wait so long. After leaving this review I was contacted by a very nice gentleman who apologised profusely. He had looked into my review and having ascertained that it was a correct statement of fact he offered me a refund on my meal. Which I have happily accepted. I hope that he looks into that days events so that they don't happen again. I have upgraded my star rating from a 1 to a 3 star in recognition of the refund. Many thanks The West Gate.

Sadly a very disappointing experience whilst dining at this pub on our first night in Bath. We stopped by for dinner as it looked lovely and cosy from the outside and the menu on the wall at the entrance looked great. Upon arrival we were told that they were out of beef burgers, hunters chicken and Mac and cheese, which was fine, there were other options. We sat down and were greeted by lovely staff - about the only good part of our evening here, and ordered our drinks and meals. 10 minutes later, we were then told they were out of fish and chips so my partner had to change his order and went for the sausage and mash. About 20 minutes later, our drinks hadn’t arrived and we had to remind a member of staff that we were still waiting. They then sorted our drinks but came back to the table without 2 of our drinks, as we’d ordered 2 cokes alongside our alcoholic drinks. When the food arrived I was really let down to see that the ‘dressed salad’ as mentioned on my meal option was a few shreds of iceberg lettuce, and a cherry tomato cut in half with a drizzle of what looked like some sort of vinegar dressing - quite disgusting to look at in all honesty but we didn’t want to complain further. The quality of the food in both meals was poor and so was our service, despite the staff being very polite and friendly - which we can’t fault them for that. Had the place been really busy, we could maybe have understood and initially we were understanding with the unavailable items on the menu, as we know these are hard times, however this was just a poor experience and we wouldn’t return or recommend based on what we experienced. We paid good money for a poor service all round. I do hope that they pick up, as it’s a shame for the front of house team that have to represent this.

Great local pub in the heart of Bath. It can be easily missed because of the narrow streets. If you are wanting to grab a bite to eat whilst shopping, going out for a meal or just catch up with friends this place can cater for all. I went here during the football and it was a great atmosphere. They have several large screens and loads of space. There is an upstairs and I just felt this pub had areas which are perfect for a gathering and still private. They work on an app purchase which I can see being the way forward for most pubs now. No longer the days of standing at a bar having to wait to be served. The dirty burgers were great and full of taste.

Unfortunately the food is the reason we came into the pub, and it was extremely disappointing :/ The staff was great and the atmosphere was nice, so I would recommend going in strictly for drinks. We both got the cheddar and bacon burgers, and I am so sorry to say but this was one of the worst burgers I have had out at a pub or restaurant. It was so so dry that even massive amounts of ketchup couldn’t save it, and on top of that, mine was extremely burnt/charred on the bottom and I didn’t want to finish it. Tasted like something your grandad grills on the barbecue and burns but you eat it anyways :(

my first time coming here goes as follows: Good points: the staff were lovely. Bad points: food took almost an hour to arrive, the side salad was a tiny, squished up clump of spinach. the macaroni cheese main with bacon was £10+ and was a SINGLE piece of macaroni DEEP across a tiny dish. finished it within about 5 seconds and didn't feel any fuller. would have been satisfied if it came as a (cheaper) side but for the price, absolute rip-off. we also got spicy halloumi which was wet and tasted nothing like halloumi and some of the sliders which were miniscule and very dry. disappointing.

We visited this lunchtime, on arrival we were greeted by a very friendly lady behind the bar. We found a free table and ordered food & drink, the prices were very reasonable, the food came out quite quickly and it was delicious, my husband even said it was the best steak he had ever had, so tender & flavourable. I had steak & ale pie & our son had chicken nuggets from the kids menu. Overall we were really pleased on such a lovely visit. The staff were very kind and helpful. The building is beautiful, very clean & nicely decorated. Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
